'Pokemon Sword & Shield Won't Let You Transfer Every Old Pokemon Over'

gamespot.com/articles/e3-2019-pokemon-sword-and-shield-wont-let-you-tran/1100-6467720/

It's not a temporary thing for this game like in past games, it's a deliberate decision. You'll only be able to transfer a limited number of Pokemon - ones that are already in the game. Mega Evolutions and Z-Moves are also gone, only Dynamaxing is in the game.

During the Treehouse livestream, game producer Junichi Masuda revealed that not every previous Pokemon will be transferable to Sword and Shield. "Players will be able to transfer their Pokemon from Pokemon Home only if they appear in the Galar region Pokedex," Masuda said through an interpreter. What that means is that if a Pokemon isn't already obtainable within Sword and Shield, you won't be able to transfer it over from Pokemon Home.

Masuda acknowledged this is a change from how the previous Pokemon cloud service, Pokemon Bank, worked and explained the rationale behind this controversial decision:

"In previous games that worked with the Pokemon Bank service, you were able to--for example, in Sun and Moon--bring over any Pokemon, even if they weren't in the Alola Pokedex," Masuda said. "But with the transition to the Nintendo Switch hardware, being much more powerful [and] allowing us to be much more expressive with each of the individual Pokemon ... at Game Freak we really spent a lot of time thinking about what the best way to move forward was, really preserving the quality of all the different Pokemon while also taking into account the battle balance, having so many different Pokemon available, all within a limited development time so we don't keep fans waiting too long for every new entry in the series. And after a lot of discussion, we decided to come to a new direction."

Very odd decision from them. They've already reused the same models over and over and they'd even future-proofed them which is why the 3DS games chugged a bit, so it shouldn't have taken that much more work - and they didn't say anything about patching it in... and historically they don't like patching stuff. And they called it a 'new direction' for them implying they haven't done this kind of thing before. We can even see the exact same models being used in Sword and Shield. Also they already implement banlists in tournaments to restrict usage of certain Pokemon which takes care of the balance problem.

And now any Pokemon that gets uploaded to Pokemon Home (released next year as an evolution to Pokemon Bank) will be trapped inside it if they're not in Sword & Shield. >.> Fans of those will have to hope their fave pops up in a newer game I guess. The internet's reception of this news isn't the best, to put it lightly.

Edit: Just adding a couple more things:

Nessa is the Water Gym Leader, who has a Drednaw.

Yamper(Electric) and Impidimp (Dark/Fairy) were also introduced.

A few things in this vid. Gigantamaxing is another version of Dynamaxing for specific individual Pokemon that you can only get via Max Raids. Not all individuals of a particular Pokemon will be able to Gigantamax. No idea if you can breed the 'Gigantamax gene' or whatever onto other members of that species. Drednaw, Corviknight and the newly introduced Alcremie can all potentially Gigantamax. They all have particular G-Max moves as well.

Speaking of new Pokemon, we have Alcremie (Fairy), Duraludon(Steel/Dragon) and Rolycoly(Rock). Rolycoly can have the Steam Engine ability which drastically boosts its speed when hit with a Water or Fire attack.

Two new version-exclusive Gym Leaders were introduced - Sword has Bea the Fighting Gym Leader and Shield has Allister the Ghost Gym Leader. Bea is confirmed to have a Hitmontop and Allister has a Mimikyu.

We are also introduced to Chairman Rose who setup the Galar Pokemon League and his secretary/vice president Oleana.

Lastly it was confirmed that the Deino and Jangmo-o families are exclusive to Sword and the Larvitar & Goomy families are exclusive to Shield.

Just updating this with more recent info. There'll be more to come out very soon too apparently:

Video:

Galarian Weezing is a Poison/Fairy type that sucks in poison and filters out clean fresh air from its smokestacks. Its abilities are Levitate or the new Neutralizing Gas, which shuts off other abilities.

Galarian Zigzagoon and Galarian Linoone are Dark/Normal types, and they have the first revealed Regional Evolution - Obstagoon. It's thought they're based off a cross between a badger and the rock band KISS. Obstagoon itself has the abilities Reckless and Guts.

Morpeko is an Electric/Dark type that switches forms every turn from Full Belly mode to Hangry mode. This also turns its Aura Wheel attack from Electric type to Dark type depending on what form it is in.

Bede and Marnie are your other two rivals besides Hop. Bede is trying to complete the Gym Challenge in Galar, having been sponsored by Chairman Rose, but has other intentions as well. Marnie is another trainer who wishes to become Champion of Galar and has a competitive side, but she has developed a rather unruly fanbase shown below.

Team Yell are the antagonists of the region. They're huge fans of Marnie and will stop at nothing to make her Champion of the Galar region. To obstruct her rivals (including you), they take over hotel lobbies, prevent challengers from accessing transportation, and even shout and distract opponents during battle. They do however listen to her when she asks them to stop, but when she isn't around they keep causing problems.

Another update I forgot to add until now:

Video:

Farfetch'd in the Galar region can evolve into Sirfetch'd. It's a pure Fighting type and learns the moves Retaliate and Meteor Assault, and also has the ability Steadfast. It's exclusive to Sword version.

Cramorant is a Flying/Water type cormorant Pokemon. It has the ability Gulp Missile - when it uses Surf or Dive it will return with a kind of catch in its mouth, possibly a variety of catches such as a fish, which it will spit out at its opponent when it gets damaged.

Polteageist is a Ghost-type tea Pokemon, and has the Weak Armor ability.

Video:

There is also a new feature in these games called Pokemon Camp, which replaces Pokemon Amie/Refresh. You can play with your Pokemon here, and you can also make and feed your Pokemon different types of Curry.

Alcremie has multiple forms called 'Flavors' which change their color and decorations.
