Drunk rant: I miss gormands.
I am disappointed in the lack of high society foodie culture in which 7 couse french feasts, large appetites and table ettiquette were synonymous with intelligence, literature, and class. Today's foodie culture is full of ex-addict punk rock extreme rebels who traded barbiturates for bacon. Instead of enjoying each rich, decadent dish on its own merit, everything has to be a deep-fried fusion of one thing stuffed with another thing served in on anything but a plate.
One of my favorite tales of indulgence is about Alfred Hitchcock taking meetings at some high-quality restaurant and gracefully pitching a role while plowing through a massive meal and then ordering the same thing again.
