Can I also request that the default for videos be "newest" instead of "recommended"? I'm not sure why this is the case for videos but not pictures.

Yeah this is an annoyance because I use incognito mode on my browser, which does not save cookies. I prefer the way it was before.

I've seen quite a few photos on this site which are of a high enough resolution that they will be cropped off on the sides when viewed even though the whole photo is visible in the thumbnail.
