Devon and his fatboy

chapter 2

That became Cory's existence. He worked at the bank and came home to a wonderful dinner prepared by his mom who was so used to preparing food in the proportions she did previously, didn't alter them now that his father was gone. It was no wonder that Cory's size kept slowly increasing over the years. As his mom entered her early 60s, her health began to fail, declining steadily from cancer three years later. Cory, ever the dutiful son, became caretaker in those years, some days working from home on his computer given to him to use by the bank in order to take care of her. His mother, while grateful for the love and attention he gave, sometimes worried that he had no social life to speak of, but rarely spoke of it to him.
In the last months, Cory had taken to preparing meals for his mom and himself, as she was getting weaker and couldn't stand for long periods of time. She often didn't have much of an appetite and the uneaten meals were often absent-mindedly finished by Cory who was taught never to waste food. All through this period, Cory never complained about any of the hardships. Maybe for that reason, his mom decided that for his upcoming birthday, hard as it would be for her, she would bake his favorite cookies with him, just like they did when he was younger. It would be a memory Cory would cherish.
While they prepared the cookie dough mix, they reminisced about all the great times they shared together and had a lot of laughs. Cory couldn't help notice that as difficult as it was for her to do this, she seemed determined to pull this off. She rolled out the dough, cut out the shapes and put the cookies in the oven to bake. She interspersed a few concerns about Cory's not finding someone to settle down with after she was gone. Her choice of words seemed deliberate; she didn't say "a girl" but "someone". Perhaps she sensed what Cory had never verbalized: he liked boys. Not that he ever acted on it at this point; sex in general was sublimated by food. The more serious nature of the conversation didn't interfere with the fact that the cookies turned out spectacular and they both had a wonderful time decorating each one, and sampling them. As it turned out, it was to be a final birthday gift and memory.
Cory had developed into an extremely light sleeper in case his mother called out during the night for something. While he usually tried to stay in bed a little later on Sunday mornings, something told him that next morning to look in on her. He had a premonition which unfortunately turned out to be true: she was gone.
