Is fat really all that bad?

I've talked to a lot of my peers at college, and I've realized that the "Freshman 15" is a common topic. They act like that extra few on their thighs/tummy is going to be the end of them.

Quick question, is fat the worst thing that can happen to a person? I think not. I mean, you could step on a landmine. Or be mauled by thousands of insects. Or other objectively worse things.

What's caused this?

Is fat really all that bad?

The 20th/21st centuries'media/fashion world/medical world's constant, unremitting message from the moment that we are born that thin is good and to be applauded and is a sign of self control and success;whilst fat is bad and to be criticised and is a sign of no self control and failure!
If it's been drummed into you since day one, then it kind of takes holdsmiley

We are all individuals & should do what WE feel is right for us.Too many people have it in their minds that society knows what's right for everyone else.Fat is fat...it's up to the person to decide if it's good or bad for them NOT some Dr. or fashion designer.
