Coping with the heat

It’s summer time in the UK, which on some levels I really enjoy … but there are those days when it gets just *too* hot for me and I find it quite a challenge and very tiring.

I like to do a lot of walking too, even in the summer, but that can be more of a challenge sometimes these days.

Any general advice?

(Other than ice cream which I eat copious quantities of lol)

Drink a lot of water, it shouldn’t be drunk just when you’re thirsty you need to drink more depending how big you are. But beyond that there’s not much that can be done just be sure to take breaks and sit in a cool shaded area

I've heard y'all don't have AC. Get a portable one or at least a fan. If you can get out of the house and go to places with AC for most of the day or go swimming, that's also good.

This is true. Fortunately I have a fan at home which helps somewhat though.

Coping with the heat

I’m sorry if you are uncomfortable with any ammount of heat or lack there of it sucks, especially as bigger people.

But yall summers are so mild it’s kinda funny when you guys complain about the heat just today it was 98 but it feels like it’s 110 I just checked the temp in Britain it’s like a high of 80 😂

You gotta remember that it is humid, there's no AC, and the buildings are made to retain heat.

I will also say that they sell handheld ACs at some Walgreens locations. That said it might be easier to google "handheld AC". One of my coworkers found one, and they say it works pretty well!

Also, I legit didn't know that AC was that uncommon in the UK.

Looks like hand-held AC are electric fans. Never heard it called that before.

You'll find many European buildings don't have AC. Modern buildings often do, but not most older buildings. It makes perfect sense if you think about it. For centuries, the UK climate tended to be very cold year-round, so it made perfect sense to make buildings that retain heat.

But then ... global warming. Now, a lot of those buildings are essentially saunas. You build things based on what you need. If your needs change, you gotta make new buildings, retrofit, or you're screwed.

This is true. I’ve spoken to people here who have come from hotter countries but say the UK feels hotter due to the humidity and the lack of a nice breeze much of the time.
