Obviously all body types and things are different. I can give you some insight from my personal experience.
When I first started to gain it went to my belly first and became tight and hard and swollen. I looked like an in shape lean guy that developed a beer gut. Over time with more gaining it got slightly softer and I fattened up in my ass and all over slightly even my face but that took a little bit of time for the weight to settle into those spots. Over the years through a few gains and losses once my body took slightly different shape from Tall/lean to Tall/Big & Husky with physical body maturity I guess my gaining would change.
When I gain now at first my Belly will get big and swollen slightly tight and not only stick out in the front but form pretty wide off of my sides. If I start to eat I can gain pretty fast and it shows very quickly. I can gain 30 Lbs. in two months with only slight changes in my eating and my appetite grows really fast.
The other thing that is different from before is my set point at where my weight will settle. After I gained in the past and if I let up on eating so much and worked out more my weight would decrease with time and I would lose that 30+ Lbs. Nowadays I don't really get below 230 Lbs. even with intense work outs and eating good. So the 20 Lbs. or so never really goes away like it used to.
