This is thin privilege

A lot of you may already be aware of this, I just thought some people might be interested in having a look. It's a bit like the Everyday Sexism project, but with the focus on fat discrimination/social & cultural erasure. Maybe some of you (particularly those newer to ideas of body/size acceptance) may find it cathartic & useful (or make you constructively angry), I've found it makes for some interesting reading.

Thin privilege, however, does not exist and you'd be insane to think it does.

Fat discrimination and hatred does indeed exist, and is pretty damn common. Part of the dynamic is that fat bodies are othered and defined by not being the acceptable norm. The privileging of thin bodies over fat ones is the inevitable corollary, fat hate and discrimination do not exist in a vacuum, and you'd have to be blind to think it doesn't.

I don't know. I have a lot of mixed feelings about that blog to be honest. Too many criticisms of it come off as OMG FAT PPL ARE SOOOO STUPID STOP WHINING FATTIES instead of legit stuff.

Quite possibly there are instances and individual submissions where legitimate criticism can be made, though overall criticism of the concept itself tends towards saying either a) fat people face no discrimination/hate or b ) fat people deserve the discrimination and hate that they experience.

I know, all the posts describing thin privilege here and elsewhere are just total nonsense and it doesn't really exist, no matter how many times fat people tell you it does.

Pull your head out of your own ass, dude.

Thin privilege, however, does not exist and you'd be insane to think it does. Especially since more often than not, if one is fat, it's their fault. Again, not always but usually. Losing weight isn't easy but if you try it can be done.

That tumblr itself is awful as well. They hate it when people decide to lose weight or even if someone who isn't overweight/obese decides to talk on there. Pretty much everything else is just utter stupidity.

It's sad when there are actually intelligent submissions but are submitted there.

Either way, don't associate with that tumblr. It's terrible and pretty much everyone who supports it is as well.

I feel like you MUST be a troll
surely no one can that ignorant to the world around them ??

you do realise that fat people can LEGALLY be rejected for organ transplants, surgeries, visa and residency applications, adoption etc.
based SOLELY on their weight
and that not only does this happen but the general public supports it in the name of 'health'

how is that not discrimination ?

and you state that people being fat is 'their fault' and they can just change it if they dont like how theyre treated

is that then the grounds for whether discrimination is acceptable or not ?

choice ?

so anything that is someones choice can be the basis for discrimination ?

so i guess when children are bullied for the alternative clothes they wear or the music they listen to thats perfectly okay because hellooo they can just change it right

oh and i guess if a thin person IS discriminated against purely because of their size then thats also okay because they could just gain weight right ?

the answer is no

your logic is flawed

When it's something like, say you're not allowed on a tanning bed because you're too heavy for it, that's not discrimination. That's on you and your options are to deal with it or lose the weight.

Thing is, in that example, is there anything in particular about the tanning process that means that beds cannot be built with higher weight/size tolerances? Or is it because 'people are THIS size, and if you are not this size, you do not count'? A more pertinent example would be MRI scanners. There have been instances where patients who cannot fit into an MRI scanner at a hospital have had to use ones designed for animals at vets or zoos. Not only can this be humiliating, it highlights the fact that MRIs do not need to be designed in such a way that they exclude fat bodies (and I doubt that to design them otherwise would result in some sort of reverse situation where thin people are excluded from using them). To design them, along with much of our society, to purposefully exclude 'wrong' body types is far more of a choice than being fat is.

I love coming to a fat-positive site and seeing the same sort of fat-shaming and discriminatory comments that you can see literally everywhere else on the internet.

Ugh you literally dont get it

first of all
I was referring to how obese people can be rejected for organ donation based on their weight, on the receiving end

and dont you get that assuming all obese people are unhealthy is discrimination
youre grouping a bunch of people together and putting a label on them that isnt necessarily true, and then refusing to provide adequate health care based on this label
that is discrimination

and besides you still didnt answer my question ?

is anything else that is a persons choice up for discrimination then ?

not to mention that body size isnt always a choice

As for the BS in the second paragraph, I won't be as polite as Eve - I will simply say f*ck the f*ck off telling me to lose weight on a fat fantasy site.

It is quite depressing that even here there are people who seem to regard a fat body as a wrong body or failed body. I suppose that's just how deeply ingrained this stuff is.
