to call someone gordita is like a term of endearment. Gorda not so much. But, I've had mexican girlfriends who were on the chunky side and their friends and family all referred to them as gordita.
Around here Latinas carry their weight well and show it off! Caucasians tend to hide it and dress with loose clothes, likely to hide their shape. For Blacks it seems about 50/50.
