I also married into another culture, with a huge wife from the country side of Osaka.
Mom would always scold her daughter in front of me for getting too fat, like she was really trad and thought as "Her Man" I would finally whip her girl into shape.
But now she's so huge she needs help with almost everything, and Mom has happily accepted it. Despite being so "thin", there's a weird current in Japanese society where if a lady keeps getting fatter and can't stop eating, it becomes clear she was destined to be super obese, and it's best to just help her be happy, while teasing her about her size.

That’s def an interesting perspective, and it’s funny, my mother in law does the same. Gets on her case about weight and she’s even bigger! Lol
