Gaining

Stuck at a plateau for ages - help? ideas?

I too have been through and share much of what you say. I have Crohn's disease so that makes gaining very difficult for me too. I have also been on Prednisone so many times. Which yes, it can cause weight gain, but holy hell the other side effects make that medication so horrible! Best of luck in your journey! smiley

I feel for you. I had a bout with inflammatory bowel disease due to misuse of Augmentin (destroyed my normal intestinal bacterial flora and I suppose resulted in a bout with C. Dif. but came up negative for that by the time I got it checked out). Lucky for me the prednisone and another drug (can't remember the name) got me straightened out in a couple months. These inflammatory diseases of the intestinal tract really are horrible and under-served. Like why do we see promotions for all these new treatments for skin diseases like psoriasis but not much on IBD. WTF!!

Things have definitely gotten better with treatments and being diagnosed. It took over a year for them to figure out I had Crohn's. All while they were just guessing and throwing all sorts of pills at me trying to figure it all out. IBD is or has a lot in common with other autoimmune diseases. Like psoriasis. Which they have been making all these new drugs called biologics. Like Humira, Remicade, etc. They can work for many of the same diseases. Even though some are only approved for certain ones. So that's why it's so commonly seen nowadays. Those meds are insanely expensive. Like $3,000-$10,000+ a vial. Where a single dose could be 4 or more vials every couple of weeks. So, they want that money they are advertising like crazy. Hope you are doing and feeling better! Take care!

Yeah I was really lucky as it seemed was a 1 time flare-up for me, especially since I waited too long to get it checked out. I think it was Asacol (with Prednisone) that they treated me with. After a few months it seemed to clear up and hasn't come back. I am somewhat familiar with these new biologic drugs which are all pretty much monoclonal antibodies (any time the actual drug name, not the brand name, ends with the letters 'mab', you know it is an antibody). These things are very difficult to manufacture, so that partly contributes to the high cost. I could say a lot about the issue of high drug costs having worked for a 'big pharma' company for many years. Anyways, best wishes.
