Fat experiences

Knees taking the strain of my weight

I've had a bad knee injury for around a year now, had it swell up out of nowhere. I had to be transported to hospital in an ambulance and was referred to physiotherapy where I was given exercises to do. As a result, my knee... mostly healed up, but it was still creaking and cracking when going down stairs, for example.

Fast-forward to today, and I just got seen by an orthopedic specialist who straight-up said there's nothing they can do because it's a "textbook example of overloading the patella" or in other words, I'm fat enough that my knees are struggling.

I'm torn between being annoyed there's nothing they can do about it and... weirdly aroused that I'm heavy enough to cause such an issue? I'm not trying to gain weight but I am trying to at least accept my morbid obesity (according to BMI values anyway since I'm ~275 pounds).

I don't know, it's a weird feeling being told straight that my excess weight is causing a problem like this. I just have to hope it doesn't get worse...!

Health insurance worker here. I strongly advise you to proceed with caution. If your size is truly the problem, then either you need to lose weight or get your strength up. Because if you keep pushing it, it will get worse. And worse can mean surgery or a knee replacement.

Take care of your knees and they will take care of you.

I'm not certain my size is solely the problem, otherwise the physiotherapists would have mentioned it, but you're right, I should be careful.

Yeah. You and I are the same age. And if there is one thing everyone has warned me, it's that your knees start to go when your 30 unless you take care of them.
