I consider myself a very lucky woman because I married the person I love most in the world eight days ago. We live in Pennsylvania and chose a Sandals resort for our honeymoon. Because we knew at my size, travel would have special considerations, we over planned, which allowed us to have an amazing time and greatly reduced stress. Here are some of our experiences, which include both inconveniences and things that went very very well!
Air travel-- Getting special assistance at the airports was very smart. So was traveling with my own wheelchair, as the bariatric ones at the airport were smaller than mine. I think I've reached a size though, that outside of flying private (which I've never done), no accomodations are going to be comfortable for someone close to 600lb, even with two seats in business on a front row. The issue for me was the depth of the seats. My size means I sit far forward, and the seats cut me off in the thighs while my belly extended past the seat depth. Also, I advise against flying with a stuffed belly. More on that in a moment
Accomodations -- Sandals resorts are incredibly accessible for people with disabilities and supersized folks. I was comfortable and didn't struggle in most spaces at the resort itself, although I was unable to go on the offshore island excursions by small boat. The king sized bed did support my weight, although the mattress wasn't comfortable (I sunk into it.) The accessible roll-in shower was also smart. I appreciated the setup at the resort pools too. Typically at a pool, I'm confined to actually being in the water because I don't trust pool furniture to support me. However, this resort had the partially submerged concrete loungera at the pool's edge. These helped me stay cool and also gave me another option to sit, read, and enjoy cocktails.
The food - Our resort offered SO MANY options in their all inclusive package as well as full room service. I enjoyed Italian, seafood, Mediterranean, steakhouse cuisine, Asian. Whatever we wanted was available, and the breakfasts were incredible too. We didn't want our whole honeymoon to be about food, but I also didn't restrict myself. On our next to last day though, we did a full fledged stuffing day. I ate huge meals at eight of the ten restaurants and got room service twice. I ended up immobilized, bloated, and short of breath by the end of the day, and somewhat lethargic the following day. I will add, my belly was still stuffed when we flew home, and I suffered from major bloating, discomfort, and leg swelling on the flights. Not sure eating tens of thousands of calories and flying two days later if something I would do again.
Weight gain - did put on about 14 pounds in 5 days, so I'm going to have to be mindful of my health since my body doesn't do so well when I hit 600, but I am glad we got to "play" and enjoy some fun with stuffing me to the brim. My belly button has also almost completely flattened out with the added fat on my gut. It's not quite an outtie, but there's now only a very shallow indent with a puffy, raised ring around it. It makes me feel like I've unlocked a new level of big belly!
So much more to tell, but I'm thankful for a special celebration with people we care about and then for an amazing week. I'm also glad I pre scheduled Monday and Tuesday off from work to unwind before getting back to reality!
