Why are people so angry at fat acceptance movements on the internet?

JN_TumLover56:
So I had recently watched a video from a YouTuber named “Daisha Unique” and this woman, a plus size woman talked about her personal frustrations with fat acceptance and mukbangs (or whatever it’s spelled).

youtu.be/msjsPzV8Chg

Now I didn’t watched the whole thing because I already know most of the things that was discussed and I couldn’t really stomach it after everything that I have been through having my algorithms sting me with stuff like this. But either way it had me thinking about this thread and tracked it down again.

Now I did posted a big comment about everything I thought about it in one of the earlier comments. After briefly watching it and reading the comments, it seems like how so many people have turned on against FA/BP is because some people have broken away from the “lies and delusions” and decided to be more healthier. Especially from what I have seen in the comments section. I had to post a comment for everything that I had to say, a big one with a hint of nuance. 😅

Now there is nothing wrong with losing weight if that’s what someone wants to do. It’s like I have mentioned that there’s a fine line between doing so for looking after one’s wellbeing versus pursuing beauty standards.

I’ll always do my best as an ally with the plus size space. Still though, it sucks as someone who has a preference for liking bigger women to be stung like this again. But I guess that’s what happens when you care too much about a community that you care about. Perhaps it’s just a reality I have to live with and finding that nuance and keep on racing.

I think my man Theodore told me about this video. Funny how she criticized her own kind that motivated herself to stop procrastinating and start hitting the gym! 🤣

But in all seriousness the way how people go about to try and fry up themselves for fame is kinda delusional. Though speaking of delusion I can tell from your concern about the comments from that video. Still hopefully you’re doing better now. We gotta stick together. 👊

Did you even pay attention to the video?

Whether or not you like what she has to say is beside the point. How can you criticize her video when it is clear that you either did not watch it or do not understand it?

Based off of what she said the into and what she wrote in the description not to mention all of the comments is enough for me to conclude that! It’s funny really, but reality it’s the impression that a truthful person acts.

Munchies:
This is a video essay, made by a fat black woman, is not about hating on fat people. She makes it very clear that she doesn't hate how she looks, she thinks you can be beautiful at any size, and that fat people are valid.

The video is ACTUALLY about the dangers of sacrificing your health for money and fame. She even spends an entire chapter talking about how the body positivity movement has been perverted into something else.

She also gives the same energy to the other side of the spectrum. She talks about people who glorify thinness as if it's the pinnacle of beautify and health only to end up knocking on death's door. This video has a lot of nuance to it that you are glossing over.

Nicely said! You sound like a true essayist. 🤗

He who casts judgment without full context is an idiot.

I can't tell you how many times I read or watched something that I had a visceral negative reaction to within the first 2 minutes but had a different opinion of it by the end.

You watch the whole thing, and THEN you form your opinions. To do otherwise is very irresponsible and potentially dangerous.

I am an essayist of sorts - but mostly as a hobby these days. I have a background in public speaking, debate, and essays. Even participated in state competitions.

It was fun.

Beloved, don't start talking about a video if you didn't finish watching it. That's not fair of you at all.

I watched this video in it's entirety. I'm going to give it a break down for the lazy people I know will not click on the video.

Thank you for not only responding but also taking the time to watch the full video from the start to the finish, unlike me who failed to do so. Or at best skipped through parts that I didn’t want to listen about. I guess at that moment I wasn’t necessarily mentally prepared for watching it compared to others (like that Jubilee video I was talking about some time ago).

I was sorta thought the video was what that 52 guy was yakking about how she was criticizing “her own kind”; something that I’ve been seeing about recently especially from those who used to be fatter previously.

But now that I read everything you said and broke it down, now I do feel kinda bad that I haven’t given that video a fair chance to watch it. Especially since that a lot of people like to brand so much negativity on their videos. Something that has become a little problematic in today’s media. But I did what I could to say what I wanted to say in the comments as well as supported the other comments that I agreed to… even those that were trying to defend the BoPo Movement with that bit of nuance. Nothing else that I could do now.

I know we may not always see eye to eye. But this is one of those moments where I actually feel more appreciated from you this time. So thank you Munchies. Heck, maybe you should copy everything you said and put it into Daisha’s video in the comments! I bet some people would feel appreciative for something well thought and written.

I do support the BP movement and learning how to love yourself no matter how large or small you are.

It’s good to hear that you support it. And thank you.

So, what I’ve observed back when social media was still in its infancy is the misogynistic double standards when it comes to being fat. We’ve seen it propagated in media for over 30 years how it’s acceptable to be fat as a man but not as a woman. Shows like Family Matters, Fresh Prince of Bel Air, King of Queens etc. where the husbands is fat but the wife is the bombshell.

And we can even look at music, same kind of thing. Biggie Smalls/Notorious B.I.G, Heavy D, Big Pun, Fat Joe, The Fat Boys etc. Why am I mentioning them, you may ask?

Because it’s mighty funny how when Lizzo showed confidence and being unapologetic about her weight, she was “promoting obesity”
But when male rappers literally base their rap persona off of being fat, they was considered the GOATS of their genre.

Lizzo, literally got bullied into losing weight but meanwhile, current rapper T. Grizzly faces zero criticism.

Body positivity and fat acceptance ONLY became an issue when women began to show confidence in themselves instead of feeling sorry for themselves.

Did I forget to mention that Big Pun and Heavy D literally died from being obese and yet to this day are praised for their music but again Lizzo was bullied into a weight loss journey? So she was promoting obesity but they weren’t? When they literally died from being obese??? Smh it’s infuriating
