I do own an editing and proofing business. Not so much a sell, just curious about the niche.

Ok. For stuff on here (which I haven’t written for in forever, sorry everyone), I have a couple super beta readers who I trust. They always give great insight, down to the line level.
For non-smut writing I’ve used it all: editors who make suggestions, editors who will just go in and change my stuff to fit, fully self-edited, you name it.
I’ve tried AI editing. It undeniably has some utility, but it’s limited and it makes mistakes. I can see it putting a lot of people out of work, though. That’s a lousy trade-off for the convenience of something that’s always on (although it’s not, really) and is cheap.
The sucky part right now, imo, is that we’re in a middle place where you can very easily hire an editor on Reedsy or Upwork, pay standard dev or line edit rates (not cheap at all on Reedsy), and get a deliverable that was produced with AI. So instead of paying $20 for a month of pro Claude, or whatever it costs, you shelled out $2000 for essentially the same thing. Or you’re always worried that you did. Weird times.

AI does have its used, and its limitations for sure. There is a lot of buzz around it in the editing community, as well as talk of the ethics around disclosing whether you use it and/or offer services without it.

I know that people who pay for human edits and get AI get PISSED. The editors who don’t disclose it will ruin the whole industry for everyone else. In the words of ChatGPT, that’s not just unethical — that’s fraud!
