Fat experiences

Fat family?

Bigdoug:
The genetic component of being fat is not a belief, it’s a scientific fact! That doesn’t mean that relationship with food as a learned behavior is not an important component as well. People who are not genetically predisposed towards fat also get fat. In that case it’s exclusively behavioral. However, there are plenty of chubby people out there whose behavior is not weight inducing and yet they struggle to control their weight. Don’t know why this is such a “controversy”?!

Morbidly A Beast:
I don’t believe in such a thing as a raw fact, in any sense, but genetics in and of themselves have some expletive power but they do not tell the whole story of a person. Genetics are largely a racist social Darwinist mode of determinism.

I simply do not believe there’s a genetic basis to being fat. height, muscle mass, bone density these are environmental and developmental/social aspects, and genetics are only 50%

It’s not controversial, im not the one pressing you. You’re pressing me. You brought it back up I just disagree.

So, on one hand you’re claiming that genetics have nothing to do with weight, on the other hand you’re saying they are only 50%! Which one is it, because it simply can’t be both!
Also, genetics themselves are not racist, social Darwinism or determinism. That’s just how some people unfortunately use or interpret genetics. Eye color is genetically determined, saying green eyed people are better than blue eyed people is racist (just for the sake of this argument).
I really don’t care whether you personally “believe” in genetics, just tired of the currently widespread and fashionable (in some circles) anti science sentiments!

The claim is that being fat is genetic, and I disagree with the premise. It’s certainly the case that some people are genetically predisposed to store fat easier than others, and a number of genetic conditions that relate to fat storage this does not mean being fat is genetic. It’s a yes and.

I said height(and other things are genetic) is 50% genetic, malnourished kids are shorter than the rest of their stock.

Being fat is 100% a food relation thing and to suggest anything other than that is absurd and ridiculous. Most fat people who struggle with their weight are not honest with how many calories they eat in a day.

And I can only say this because I believe all fat people should feel comfortable in their bodies. Regardless if they share this kink or not.

HEIGHT is roughly 80% genetic from what I've heard. I still think WEIGHT has some genetic influence but is mostly down to eating habits.

Fat family?

My mother's side of the family is all overweight.
My grandfather was obese, my aunt weighed 560 lbs and both of her children are overweight, my sister gained weight during her last pregnancy and is now obese.
I've been obese my whole life and have always had a tendency to gain weight quickly.
Some people eat a lot and don't gain weight, while others, like me, gain weight very fast.
I think it's genetic.

Actually genetics account for about 50% of someone’s weight. It’s not one “single gene” but rather genes influencing your metabolism, fat storage, appetite etc. That’s what the science says. My own experience confirms that. I have fat relatives who have worked very hard not to be fat and never managed to be less than chubby.

I agree. I have alot of women in my family and most have high metabolisms and stomach ulcers. Thats why its been so hard to gain. After I get pergnant that should help. Most of my young adult life, I was dangerally underweight, even though I had been trying to gain for years. I also found out I have two genetic autoimmune disorders so when I get sick and or depressed I can't eat solids.

Indeed. All the men in my family have beer/ball bellies of varying sizes. And all the women in my wife’s dad’s side of their family were overweight. That coupled with other factors caused her weight to double in between her first two pregnancies and she’s been above 300 ever since.
