How often to size up men’s shirts?

I’m in need of replacing my work button ups. I’d bought about a dozen larger sizes in late summer and they’re getting way too tight already. Rather than doing this same thing over and over, I’m hoping to get smaller batches and then layering them with sweaters or quarter zips. And continuing that until I hit a weight I feel good at (maybe 400). In the mean time, how often did growing guys have to size up? I just don’t want to waste money with shirts I outgrow in a few months. I’ve been gaining about 10lbs a month since August—not sure I’ll keep that up but hope to. Any advice?

Maybe it's just me, but the gaps between actual sizes shrink as they go up- like a 4X is closer to a 5X than a medium is to a large.
Also, for practically, find a good store or two and keep in mind vaguely how their stuff fits on you. Online is not always your friend- I ordered a too-cheap 6XL bowling shirt once, and their wacked-out standards would have put me in a 9 or 10XL.
P.S. in case you didn't already- avoid polyester in the summer as you get bigger. What becomes slightly warm will instead be very hot.
