Gaining

Growth spurts

I have noticed this many times...exactly what you said!

I call it the two week change......I can be eating like a pig, somewhat unhealthy, sweets, many cokes and am surprised how I don't gain any weight. All of a sudden at the two week point even though I am not eating as much and even healthier notice all the gain. Usually around 8-10 Lbs. I cant button my shorts or slacks, my belly sticks way out and I cant suck in and that two week eating all of a sudden showed up in a big way on my body.

Crazy thing is this same two week window seems to apply with me while working out. I can be cutting way back and working out insanely and nothing changes.....all of a sudden two weeks later I notice the changes. Although losing 10 Lbs. is much longer than gaining those same 10 lbs.

Yep.....kinda of crazy that we all look smaller in the morning.
By the end of the day I look and feel 20 lbs. heavier.

I wonder if spurts have something to do with increased numbers of fat cells? Perhaps at some point during a gain your fat cells reach their maximum size and all start dividing at once? Each "full" fat cell being replaced by two or four thin and hungry ones?

That would certainly explain a growth spurt but who knows.

Fat cell replication is a very powerful enabler for weight (and fat) gain, because when the fat cells divide, the body can now hold double the amount of fat! So if you were a formerly slim girl weighing 110 with a lean weight of 100 who plateaued at 150, when the fat cells divide, the next plateau would be at 200 pounds. With the next division, a weight of 300 pounds would be attainable before a plateau... then 500 pounds!

Oh my gosh, this is totally what happened to me too! I felt like I wasn't getting anywhere no matter how much I ate but then one day it was like all the fat showed up at once!

I wonder why that happens, and if it usually happens to people who have been thin most of their life, i.e., the body adjusts to the new food intake & weight?

In your case I notice you had a hiatus in your gaining during which you lost six pounds. The re-gain was apparently much easier.

Have you regained all the weight you lost? If so, has gaining continued to be easier than it used to be?

Yup, this is happening to me right now.

I ate 10,000+ calories more than I need 2 weeks ago, and felt like, "huh, I was expecting to gain some weight."

The past three days I've gained 2 inches on my stomach, and it feels like I'm growing over night. -- definitely a turn-on!
