Starvation, though tragic, is generally beyond the means of the individual to remedy. The USA alone provides thousands of tons of food a year to the starving of africa, not to mention the efforts of the European nations. The deal is that while the governments of the starving nations are corrupted these efforts may not be able to make any difference
And in regards to gaining, the US, Europe and other developed nations will continue to process the same amount of food for domestic consumption pretty much no matter what one or two individuals do, for the amount of food consumed in the western world to change in any significant way there will have to be some dramatic change in society.
So as to your question, about whether the fact that there are starving people in the world has ever put me off of gaining, no not really, because if I stopped there would be no change in the food distribution to those less fortunate.
