Gaining

Wanting to gain more, but having trouble with acid reflux.

NeverSayWhen:
I've made great gaining progress over the last couple years. I have filled out nicely gaining about 35 lbs with the help of protein shakes, full fat dairy and some light weight lifting. I've been eating a lot and I love the feeling of stuffing myself even bigger, but I've hit a plateau.

I'm stuck at 185 right now largely because when I eat excessively I'm prone to bouts of heartburn, acid reflux and indegestion. High fat and high calorie items eaten quickly are the main culprit. Sometimes the stomach discomfort outweighs any sexual satisfaction, which can be discouraging.

Anyone have advise for gaining with acid reflux? Are there tips, tricks, or certain food items that might make gaining easier? Thanks for any input!

I kinda have the same issues. Mine is often linked to stress as well. When I have something bad or annoying taking place it gets worse. I mean I would be stating the obvious here but I take either antacid tablets or over the counter pills. Too many tablets isn’t good tho cause they are high in calcium and can become addicting, the extra calcium can cause kidney stones too. But yea, something like Prilosec works for me. You take it for a month and then usually don’t need to for a good few months.

Dudl:
For me it's important, that I don't lay in my bed if I eat something. If I lay in bed and eat I get heartburn, too. And it's important for me, that I don't eat just sweets, rather also bread or warm food.

yes, when you lay down the acid kinda pools in your esophagus its quite unpleasant. Anything spicy or citrus as well, major trigger!

Even just drinking milk or dairy of some sort can cool it down a bit.

I'm in the same boat as Van on this. However I have found that if I keep off excessive amounts of alcohol while gaining, the problem is much less. However I am suffering with a persistent tickly cough and slightly hoarse voice at the moment and am not sure if this is down to gaining. Could be a little bit of reflux causing this but I don't get the heartburn I had before when drinking lots of beer as well as heavy cream etc.

Mine got progressively worse. Milk helped to neutralise the acid. I didn't have it all the time, but the major problem became a persistent cough:this can happen over a period of time, due to stomach acid irritation to the oesophagus. After seeing my doctor and a specialist, they prescribed Lansoprazole twice a day and Ranitidine before bed +a swig of Gaviscon before bed each night. It seems to have worked.

Here's a thought. Acid reflux might not be too much acid but not enough. When you digest you need really strong acid, then once it's done it's job it's neutralised.

With acid reflux your acid is too weak so takes ages to digest and ends up frothing up and coming up your throat.

When most acid medications are designed to weaken the already weak acid it's temporarily solving the problem whilst making it worse in the long run.

Solution is to add acid to your food such as vinegar. Don't eat anything which might neutralise the acid when you're digesting. However between meals it would be a good idea to take bicarbonate of soda but obviously only when you've digested the food in your stomach.

HanSelo,

Since you're referring to the NHS you're clearly full of shit. You probably work for the bastards or something. Stop promoting your NHS snake oil.

HanSelo:
Above all, ignore any advice given to you on internet forums, with the exception of this:

Go see your doctor.

The OP asked for some advice. We give some advice. You give some advice and then you say the above which not only trashes everything everyone said and everything ever written on the Internet, it trashes what you said yourself.

My advice when I'm not livid at your stupidity would be to learn as much as possible FROM THE INTERNET about the specific medical problem so you are well armed when duelling with the medical profession.

The NHS have so many failure modes that one really needs to be quite an expect before putting one of their minions in a position of dominance over your health. It can literally be as bad as Dr Shipman bumping you off in his surgery or as honest as then genuinely failing because of lack of skill and knowledge and the system being in place to cover up the failure.

The actual method of conventional medicine is one of intervention. Of forcing the result that they want. This is one way of doing things and is necessary and often effective as a last resort. An example being chemotherapy. What they are actively ignorant about is preventative medicine. They think that statins are preventative medicine, that's how bad they are at it.

Generally the body can sort itself out but it needs the right nutrients to do so. Doctors do know this and often their most effective treatment is simply to provide some relief whilst nature fixes the actual problem. An example of this would be to provide some painkillers and get them to come back in a week or two. It would have got better without the painkillers but feeling better is often helpful to getting better.

Another problem with going to the doctor is it's not in their business interest to get you better but to match you up with a treatment that their industry approves of. Purely from a consumer rights aspect you should know your stuff.

Once had them try and sell us statins not because of high cholesterol but because she was due to have high cholesterol statistically.

Han,

Jack is EXACTLY correct. The best thing you can do is be as informed as possible and take responsibility for your own treatment.

On more than one occasion (this is in the US) I have been to the Doctor and had her ready to prescribe a medication and I have said "no, what are the alternatives". In my case, she responds with a number of alternatives and in one case told me that saying no was key.

The STATE has standard treatment regimens that the doctor is open to loss of license if they do not follow UNLESS the patient says no. At that point she is free to discuss alternatives ... in some cases alternatives she thinks are better.

Having said all that, Cider Vinegar Capsules have been shown to be effective in most cases in relieving reflux. This is also supported by my personal experience.

Your misplaced faith in the medical industry would be amusing if you were not spewing it so widely. I most assuredly see my doctor, and avail myself of treatments from the medical industry. But I always decide, and decide based on research. You will always be better off by knowing the facts and using good judgement.

No he isn’t. And while I most certainly advocate becoming informed with regard to any medical condition one might develop and the treatment choices available, you both are in the realm of paranoid medical illiteracy.
