I had the same problem. Overeating wasn't doing the trick, and was costing me a lot of money.
Heavy whipping cream made all the difference. That stuff is incredible. Not only have I been able to gain a lot of weight with it, but it's so incredibly consistent. I've even been able to push through weight gain plateaus with this stuff. It's also quite affordable.
I buy about 12 quarts of heavy whipping cream per week, and that costs me a little over $37.
