I think there is truth to this. As they say in spiritual circles, if you don't pay attention to the feather, the spirits will bring out a 2x4.

For me, I am finding I like a lot of things I had no idea I liked, until I was exposed to them. At some level, that desire was always there, but it never moved fully articulated to front of mind.

Also, for me, part of the appeal is the frisson I get from the forbidden and taboo. Things we've been told all our life we should not be, but we are and we do. It is exciting to break through those barriers and release more who we are.

There is a book called The Erotic Mind by Jack Morin that you mind find interesting. It’s main idea is how we can examine the main themes of our kinks and why they manifest the way they do.

I really liked it, would definitely recommend.
