Fat experiences

Fat shamed by doctor

A while back, my doctor noted that I'm getting larger and said in a pretty condescending way that I should probably stop. I've since stopped going to her and went with another.

Good on you. Fatphobic doctors are not good doctors. And it has nothing to do with feedism. They are more likely to disregard symptoms as you being too fat rather than investing things.

And if you do end up losing weight, they are more likely to encourage unsafe practices.

That happened to a friend of mine. Her symptoms were dismissed because she was fat and it ended up being terminal cancer.

Horrible. Sadly not that uncommon.

The interesting thing is that her last several trips to the doc have involved just asking her what her weight is. She purposely just tells them a number, ha. Told them 314 most recently. I think she’s about 330 based on recent pics. :-)

Just asking? That's odd. Every time I go, I get weighed - no matter the type of appointment or doctor. They tend not to trust self-reports for this very reason.

I agree it’s odd. I’m starting to think the place’s scales aren’t set up for heavier people?

Gotta own it honestly.

This makes me nervous about going to my liver doctor in a couple of weeks. Last year they were hoping I'd lose weight but here I am, gained like 30 pounds. I'm just gonna say life happened, because it did.

I'm going in for a colonoscopy on Wednesday, here's hoping the hospital has a gown big enough to go around my hips and belly. That's not always the case. And I hope the nurses and anesthesiologist are nice or at least professional, sometimes you get nasty people who don't want anything to do with fat patients.

At least I know the gastroenterologist performing the actual procedure and he's a good guy. He did bring up my weight at the initial consult, but it was more "we have to do this at the hospital instead of the clinic for safety reasons due to your BMI". Didn't shame me at all, which was great. Then again, part of his job is convincing high risk patients to do a procedure with a notoriously unpleasant prep. Probably didn't want to scare me away!
