I can say for sure that this old medical "wisdom" has been thoroughly debunked. Dairy products(saturated fat) have been shown to make you gain subcutaneous fat and lose visceral fat while soybean oil(unsaturated fat) makes you gain visceral fat(sciencedaily.com/releases/2015/07/150722144640.htm). The ideas that all saturated fat is bad for you and all unsaturated fat is good is extremely wrong. Some saturated fats are good for you while others are bad. Same goes for unsaturated fat too. In general though, saturated fats from dairy are healthier for you than saturated fats from
Gaining with heavy cream should be fine health-wise. Not entirely sure if it would affect cholesterol though. I know cheese doesn't really affect it negatively, not sure about cream. You could try keeping an eye on it though just in case.
I strongly advise against eating bacon to gain though...

According to this(sciencedaily.com/releases/2013/03/130329125110.htm) study, oleic acid(the main fatty acid in olive oil), can help you lose visceral fat. Based off of that, I'd say overeating olive oil would make you gain subcutaneous fat. Can't say for sure though unfortunately.

The trick with olive oil is to avoid overwhelming the digestive system. Frequent small quantities (20ml max, 162 calories) mixed in sharp fruit juice (50ml, shake just before drinking) are palatable.
Heavy cream works so well that it should be in the regime of anyone who wants to gain fat. A simple mix of 200ml cream, 200ml milk and some nesquik powder makes a delicious drink providing 1000 calories and, as countless casual observations of FF members attest, seems to possess magical properties beyond those calories alone.
