Football or soccer?

I follow both "footballs"...NY Giants in American football and Borussia Dortmund in "the other" football, soccer (and anyone playing vs Man U). smiley of course when talking about it here in the States its referred to as football (for US football) and then soccer for the round ball game.

Soccer is easier to watch...plus no commercial breaks during the match, which are incessant in virtually all "US sports", to the point of disrupting game flow. Plus, soccer is basically a 2 hour time commitment to watch on TV. You're in and you're out. US football and baseball feel increasingly like all day commitments to watch a single game with times running 3 to almost 4 hours at times. Too long.

I always wondered why we call it 'football' in the USA - as kicking the ball makes up so little of a match (albeit the most important points).
A useful distinction could be 'tackle football' (USA) and 'football' (rest of world) - as 'rest of world' use their feet to move the ball.

So just a bit of history. Gridiron football... that is American and Canadian fotball... get their name as they derive from "Rugby football," what today we just call Rugby.

Ironically, Americans often get blamed for "soccer" but in fact that's what the British, especially the English, called it when they introduced it to North America. At the time they had both "Rugby football" and "association football" and somehow the latter gotten shortened to "soccer." The name stuck here even when the English dropped it.
