It's genuinely difficult to say. Meeting in person is always the best goto, but even then, there are flaws as well as you mentioning being far away.
It makes it worse that there are a lot of ways to fake stuff now. I will say that you both should hold off on doing anything monetary and the like until you meet eachother in person and are comfortable.
