I know several people who went through the surgery. All except one of them regretted it. From their experience, my understanding is that you have to be 100% onboard with the process, follow the dietary restrictions religiously, and be okay with giving up things you liked or loved before.
The one woman who had success, did so because she is very strict with herself and because she had the motivation, desire, and forethought to change everything in her life to make it possible. Today she's not able to be as active as she wanted to be, but she is able to enjoy the lifestyle she planned for. She's much happier now than she was before.
On the other hand, the men and women I know who've had it and been unsuccessful almost universally end up back where they started, but with a lot of dietary restrictions, scars, and less body confidence than before. Some were emotional eaters, some hated exercise and ate whatever they wanted, consequences be damned, and a couple, unfortunately, had spouses who did not support their efforts.
All in all, it can be done successfully, and you can find happiness with the results. BUT, you have to be motivated, supported, and work hard to prepare yourself beforehand. I definitely wish you luck.
