Fat cell replication is a very powerful enabler for weight (and fat) gain, because when the fat cells divide, the body can now hold double the amount of fat! So if you were a formerly slim girl weighing 110 with a lean weight of 100 who plateaued at 150, when the fat cells divide, the next plateau would be at 200 pounds. With the next division, a weight of 300 pounds would be attainable before a plateau... then 500 pounds!

King Farouk of Egypt. Slim in his younger years, his enormous appetites lead to increasing corpulence, and eventually his overthrow. His biography, tellingly, is entitled "Too Rich".

I have to admit I'm dragging out a doctor visit too, because I've put on 30 pounds since last year. He weighs me every time I go in for my physical. I need to see him too, so the fear of disapproval is interfering with me getting care. I've even thought of fasting before my visit to get my weight down.

In response to the comment about size inflation, yes, clothes have gotten larger at the same size. At 6' 208 or so I wore 38 inch pants, but my waist was actually 41 inches. Now at 230, my 40 inch pants are tight, but my waist is actually 44. A 280 pound guy at 6' therefore might have a 50 inch waist but still wear 44-46 inch pants. Typically I figure about 7 pounds per additional inch on the waistline.
