Fattening jobs

ILuvChubbyChix:
Even crueler, I've heard that at all Tim Hortons locations, employees are banned from taking the waste home with them at closing time, and that's why I will never buy from one.

But in the long run, this is not a benefit that should really be prioritized. The primary focus should always be the pay, followed by paid time off and healthcare coverage. Never, ever switch to another job that pays less because of free food. It's never going to be worth it.

Unless they've changed policies recently, my local Tim Hortons franchises actually had a phenomenal meal policy - they deducted $2 from your total paycheck (so $1 per week) but you could eat/drink as much as you wanted before/on break/after your shift, and got 50% off when not working that day. It really accelerated my gain when i worked there as a teenager, I remember dipping the unbaked cookie dough from the freezer in the boston cream doughnut filling and oml it was heavenly... I have a friend who still works there so as far as I know this policy hasn't changed... but possible

That being said, I completely agree with and echo what was said about pay, Healthcare, time off, but mostly job enjoyment that was also said. As much as the free food was amazing, I spent all day on my feet running around the back and would be so sore and exhausted afterwards with no bennnefits and only minimum wage. With where I'm at now, I have a cushy desk job in a hybrid work arrangement with good pay and benefits that pay for my chiropractor bc wow big boobs do a number on your neck lol.

I would recommend a desk work job, potentially with a heavy client focused company (for free food) that has good pay, benefits, parking, and is near lots of cafes/restaraunts. Bonus points if it is hybrid bc then you have the option to be at home and pig out there sometimes 😉

Injury weight gain experiences

I sprained my ankle 6 weeks ago and now that I'm finally starting to hobble around, I weighed myself and found out I gained 9lbs! I know not huge, but for 6 weeks that's a lot to me... I guess pigging out on delivery while not moving really does pack on the pounds haha...

What are some of y'alls injury weight gain experiences?

Fat accomodations for an in-person work conference

BigBallBellyGirl:
I've worked exclusively from home since the pandemic, and I haven't seen my coworkers in person since January 2023, when I was about 300 lb. In May, we have a mandatory team work retreat, and I'm concerned about logistics. Fortunately, I won't have to fly like some of our team members will, but the retreat entails 2 and 1/2 days in a hotel conference room. There is also a work dinner on the first night, and an optional social hour on the 2nd.

I'm not quite sure how to approach a request for accommodations, but I know I won't be able to fully participate. I'm 600 lb, and I have a very big midsection girth, which means I can't get into many cars. I also no longer drive, which means my husband will have to bring me to and from the venue. Additionally, I wouldn't dare sit in a standard conference room chair, and I also am unable to work at a conventional setup. If a computer is on the table in front of me, I would be unable to reach it because my belly protrudes further than my arms can reach. I have a special setup at home that includes a laptop stand and tray table, which I can maneuver into a comfortable and efficient position. Finally, the evening outings present a challenge. I'm not homebound, but I do choose restaurants carefully based on layout and seating. My company has arranged a shuttle to the destinations, which will present a challenge for me since I use a scooter and also need a sliding van door setup in order to get into a vehicle. Additionally, I use mobility aids to take care of restroom hygiene, and I struggle without my bariatric toilet seat, which is elevated and has reinforced grab bars on both sides.

Does anyone have any advice on how I can navigate this with my director? I want to attend, but my life is basically built around accommodating my size. Should I request accommodations? Should I gracefully bow out of the evening activities? All thoughts are welcome here!

Munchies:
Have you spoken to HR?

Not verbally, but I put in a request for accommodations today listing my need for bariatric seating as a starting point.

Munchies:
I would have a proper conversation HR and maybe your supervisor if you feel comfortable doing so. Either way, the only way forward is getting accommodations to attend or being excused completely.

BigBallBellyGirl:
I did, and HR was helpful. The person I spoke with is reaching out to the venue to see what accomodations can be made. I also had a high level conversation with my supervisor, explaining I've developed mobility issues and other needs in the past 2 or 3 years. She was kind, and she encouraged me to be open with HR about exactly what I need to participate. I will add, we have one other team member who isn't going because of a child with a chronic health condition, so it's not unprecedented to be excused if there aren't easy solutions. I did get the feeling my supervisor, who only sees me from the shoulders up, has absolutely no idea how big I've gotten. She may be about to find out that I've gone from "fat" to "the most obese person many people will ever see in real life".

Okay late, but HR person here. What accommodations will be provided will be limited to what they/you can bring and what the hotel/restaraunts/transportation companies can provide. Many shuttles do have an emergency exit in the rear that can have a ramp attached, it will more be if the company your business booked with offers that option and if the shuttle itself either has the layout/isle space to accommodate your width. Sans that you would be looking at wheelchair accessible cabs and getting reimbursed.

Conference seating will likely have you staying on your scooter unless the hotel has options as barbaric seating typically isn't super mobile nor widely avaliable... but for trays/laptop lifts your HR should have no problem providing that.

Restaraunts either you, the organizers or your HR should call in advance regarding width required for you to move through the restaraunt/table placement/seating options. Unless it's a cramped downtown bar, you should be able to go.

Hotel room-wise a should have everything except the bariatric/lifted toilet seat. I would bring one if possible or have plans around rails you can bring as this won't be typically held in a hotel.

Please update, curious to see how they handle this in the end...

Emotional eaters?

I find when I'm sad/depressed, the first place i go is to a coffee shop for a mocha/Frappuccino (season dependant) and a few baked goods. Admittably being apart of this community has given me the confidence to order large (xl when avaliable) and 4-6 baked goods at a time as opposed to 2, but hasn't changed much in terms of how often i emotionally eat...

I'm also a huge boredom eater as well, I just eat to do something lol. I keep snacks by the couch so whenever I'm watching TV I'm usually eating...

Outgrow seating

First one I noticed was airplane seats (which are tiny) where the arm rest left a huge bruise on my love handles and I needed an extender... also buses I typically take up a seat and a half...

Often when eating out we have half booths (wall book on one side, chair on other) and when I'm on the booth side I often have to push the table out. Plus I'll have to move it sideways to get in and out of the booth...

Similarly is movie theaters, we exclusively go to the one with reclining loveseats.

Friends with fat families

My best friends mom hovered in the 350-400 range while I was growing up, and going over there afterschool meant always a fresh batch of cookies, and as much chips/soda, and frozen chicken nuggets as we wanted. My best friend didn't seem to be affected, but her younger sister is in the 200s (I'd guess around 220) and growing. For me this was having access to yummy food and it not being penalized/told as bad, as well as the normalization of eating a bunch of junk food each day, then a full dinner. Plus I was always mesmerized by the large belly.

Half of my family is fat, and I have some relatives who actively cook high fat dishes (think butter poached steak, sour cream chive whipped potatoes, etc) and serve 3.25% milk hot chocolate as a night cap. The other half are health nuts... for me, I always found the fatter part of my family was free from counting calories or strange diets and didn't have to skip dessert. Ironically it was my skinny side of the family that made being fat look so much easier and a better quality of life.

Daily "i'm fat" reminders

I'm short and need glasses, so I often find myself going on my toes and leaning over the counter to look in the mirror... I always get shocked by the cold counter when my belly flops onto it, my belly needing to sit on it for me to get close enough to see 😂

Also my ankles/feet hurt so bad when I don't sit for long periods of time, and how much I need to sit, even when just spending a day doing chores around the apartment.

Also not being able to wear shoes that go above the ankle (even plus size) bc of my fat calves lol.

Finally, sitting down for lunch with colleagues and mine is 2x the size 😂

What's your earliest memory?

My kidself's bffs mom was very large (if I had to guess I'd say in the 400lb range) and I remember she was huggable and would make us fresh cookies and KD and we could eat as much as we wanted afterschool 2-3 days a week.

I remember in 2nd grade being distinctly aware that I was the only kid with a round visible tummy too.

Fun reminders of your weight at work

At my old job, there were t-shirts ordered in for an event, but when I requested my size my supervisor had to tell me that they only went up to size large lol. I was a 2x at that point, so I got it in the men's sizing, but it was still tight. I was the only person who exceeded the size limit and clearly most of the team knew it.

Where did your fat go on your body?

I get a lot of my gain in my boobs, but I actually gained thicker feet (not wider or longer, bottom and top of foot) which is a pain in the ass for shoe shopping. I've also got a decent belly, love handles, and back rolls.
