The thigh measurement. Take it at the thickest part of the thigh.
Your weight and other measurements vary based on how much you've eaten vs. how much you've digested or excreted and, in the case of women, your time of the month.
But if your thighs are fatter, you're fatter. Period.

I was riding on the train one time across from a chubby young woman reading a book. A guy sat next to her and started chatting her up.
"Do you read a lot?" he asked.
"WHAT???" she cried. "WHAT DID YOU SAY??"
"Uh...d-do you read a lot?"
"Oh," she said, laughing. "I thought you said did I EAT a lot!"

Why don't you try walking around with a 50-lb backpack and see how it feels? Or a 100-lb backpack? Or more?
Obviously, it will be harder than actually being that much heavier weight would be, since if you gained the weight it wouldn't be as sudden a change and your body would have time to adapt. But it might give you some insight.
