you could try telling people you have been prescribed medication that is at is making you gain weight?

that's what the control group is for - ideally experiment and control groups are as close as possible to identical before you do the experiment. so the effect is most likely real.
it doesn't have to be a metabolic effect, though - it may be psychological (if you've been fat before, you're maybe less likely to try not to gain weight..)
