Ghostly gains

chapter 15

The men's department did not like the way Justin was putting on so much weight. Fat sales staff did not promote fashion as well as they could if they were slimmer. He was sent to uniform issue again to get even bigger uniforms. Now he was into a 44.
He was referred to senior management again for another move.
They asked him to come to the office for an interview.
They gave the impression that they were concerned about his wellbeing. Why had he not gone to his occupational health appointment? Was he medically ill? Was there something going on at home? Was he feeling stressed at work?
Justin could not give a straight answer to any of the questions without telling them he was living in a haunted house. Then they would not believe him. They would think he was making it up, or going mad. Ghosts only existed in ancient castles and manor houses, not an ordinary terraced street of flats.
He could offer no rational explanation, so he said nothing and let them come to their own conclusions of why his work was not up to par.

At the end of the conversation, he was marched to occupational health and given an emergency appointment with the nurse.
The nurse took notes and asked him his medical history, before taking his blood.
Afterwards, she said his lack of concentration could be from sleep deprivation. His blood pressure was raised, which was a concern. She said she would wait a week for the blood tests to come back and then make an appointment to see the doctor.
He came away feeling unsure of himself. He was being relocated to the shop offices, away from the stress of the shop floor, just to be on the safe side until his medical tests came back.
He knew why he was sleep deprived. It was because he was terrified to go to sleep at night in his own bed in case anything happened. His blood pressure was up because he was in a constant state of alertness to try and protect himself from spiritual attack. Yes! He was stressed! He had to face it all on his own, because no one understood. They were trying to protect their own backs.
Maybe he would tell the truth when he was put in front of the doctor. But then again, what did he know about what he was going through? He was more likely to be labelled a nutter and sent to stay long term in a lunatic asylum. He had to be very, very careful!

I took a bit of a risk with chapter 12.

It’s a bit late for Halloween, but the idea for this story did not come to me until afterwards!
