chapter 5- poolside

After leaving her room and walking to her back door, Alana stepped into the backyard and made her way to the oh-so-familiar wooden fence that stood between herself and her neighbor’s pool. Out of habit she walked to the loose plank. Sure enough, as Alana poked its side, the wooden beam revealed the gap in the fence that Alana had used to great effect in high school when dating Scott.

She could see the pool through the gap. She wanted nothing more than to squeeze though the beams of the tall wooden fence like in the old days, but she was forced to admit she’d never make it. The gap in the fence which had once looked inviting and spacious, now looked positively tiny.

Even though she knew the gap had stayed the same size, she had not. Ten years and 100 some pounds ago, she’d already be lounging by the pool, but now, she was forced to make herself a new weight loss goal. Fit through the fence again. Maybe, just maybe, she could fit if she managed to slide herself in on her side, but she wasn’t willing to try. That would be way too much effort.

Letting go of the plank and letting it slide back into place, Alana waddled along the side of the fence until she reached the front of her neighbor’s house. The gate was open as usual and Alana let herself in.

The pool was finally hers and Alana wasted no time in plopping her oversized butt down on a poolside lounge chair. She could feel her butt cheeks pinching out over the sides of the narrow recliner, but it was still more comfortable than she remembered. As she closed her eyes and took in the last bit of warm sunlight the summer day had to offer. Alana slowly drifted off into a dream.

…Unfortunately.. this dream was only a memory. One Alana hardly wanted to remember.
