chapter 16 - grazing (3)

It had been several months since the two men had started speaking openly about their wives, and coordinating their plans. Chris had been trying to feel out Curtis for a while, but it wasn’t until he and Tiffany paid his restaurant a visit that he was sure. All of his patrons were morbidly obese, and his staff was almost entirely female, young, and over 300 pounds each. He overheard one young fat girl on the waitstaff lamenting to a coworker that her uniform was getting too tight again, but she couldn’t turn down the lunch discounts Curtis gave his employees. He was quite sure that a lot of this town owed a certain degree of fattening to this man. The topic was broached over a labor day weekend cookout during which two men ran out of food attempting to keep their wives satiated. It opened an opportunity for Chris to talk about planning and coordinating better on making sure their wives were “comfortable” and “well cared for” and Curtis was quite enthusiastic to agree, suggesting several ideas that would have surely resulted in the continued mass fattening of their respective wives. Chris eventually just blurted out “so how big do we really want to make them?” which tripped Curtis up enormously in conversation and resulted in a good 20 second pause as he chortled in disbelief, raised his beer to drink from it, lowered it as if he were going to say something, laughed again and re-raised his beer for a nice long swig before replying “Are you trying to tell me you actually have a limit?”

“What do you think Katelyn’s up to? She’s looking incredibly large, I can’t even venture a guess these days...” Chris prodded.

“I don’t even know, damned scale hasn’t shown up from Amazon yet, so I have no idea how deep over 550 she’s gone.” Curtis replied in a frustrated tone. “What’s Tiff up to?” he questioned.

“Caught her giddily weighing herself this morning when she thought I wasn’t around” Chris said with a smile. “She’s up to 346” he said.
“Wow. That’s quite the pace she’s setting...” Curtis commented. “If you want her topping 400 by the summer I’d say we’re well on pace.” he added.

“Oh, 400 is a bit...lower...than I’m aiming for” Chris answered with a devilish laugh.

Curtis merely reached out his beer bottle and clinked the glass against Chris’ and said “well here’s to that!”. The two men downed what remained in their bottles, and Curtis offered to grab Chris’ empty beer to take out to the recycling bin in the driveway. Opening the bin, he noticed sitting on top of some cardboard was a freshly empty container of eclairs from the bakery in town. He recognized them well, and also knew he hadn’t bought his wife any recently, and that the cardboard was all that was in those bins when he had left for work that morning.

“God damn, Tiffany...” he whispered under his breath. “You’re gonna get even bigger than Katelyn at this rate...” he added, slamming down the lid and walking back through the garage.
