Room for growth

Chapter 4

When lunch came around, Hannah found herself unsurprisingly invited to join the other young folks for a walk across the building's parking lot to where the food trucks had set themselves up, where she was astounded by the choices before her. There were baked potatoes, Sonoran hot dogs, chicken and waffles, banh mis, and even an ice cream truck with a churro sundae.

"I'm doing banh mis," Pete announced, "anyone want a Vietnamese coffee? My treat."

After unanimous acceptances of his offer, Pete left for the bahn mi truck. Tyler and Addison decided on the hot dogs, and Allie struggled before finally deciding to get a back potato.

"I could do breakfast twice in one day," Rebecca joked, "chicken and waffles?"

"Absolutely!" Hannah agreed, not mentioning that this would be her the third time eating breakfast today today, not including the bundt cake she had finished between pancakes and lunch. "So do they come every week?" Hannah asked as they stepped in line.

"At least! There's always a few trucks on Tuesdays, but sometimes they come again later in the week. It just depends," Rebecca explained.

Hannah happily watched as Rebecca ordered a decadent and highly caloric lunch. The perfect cover for her own gluttony, Hannah thought to herself as she too ordered what turned out to be a heavy plate of chicken and waffles with plenty of butter and syrup on the side.

"Pete, this coffee is so good with these chicken and waffles," Hannah noted.

"Thanks! I can't resist these things," he replied.

"I haven't tried mine yet," Rebecca chimed as she took the lid off her drink. Hannah watched in astonishment as Rebecca poured sugar into the already incredible sweet coffee. "Mmmmm that's delicious!"

With everything Hannah had eaten that day, she was really starting to feel how bloated she was becoming. She could have finished her meal, being the glutton that she was, but before she could make that decision Addison suggested they box their leftovers and make room for the ice cream truck.

"I've always got room for ice cream," Tyler laughed, "let's go!"

"Me too," agreed Pete, Allie, Hannah and Rebecca.

Although she didn't say anything, Cindy also joined them as they lined up for desert.

Allie and Cindy only got a small soft serve cone. Addison, Pete, and Rebecca got medium bowls, but Tyler and Hannah bough went for the churro sundaes.

"I'm always so tired after lunch," Pete moaned.

"Me too," Rebecca agreed. The rest of the group nodded as well. Even Hannah couldn't agree that consuming so many calories tended to make her just bit drowsy going into the afternoon.

After lunch, Hannah and Tyler made their way to Hannah's office where she could put away her lunch leftovers and pulled up a chair while Tyler took the driver's seat on her computer.

Noting the empty bundt cake package in Hannah's trash can, Tyler asked "That's the best flavor; I miss a birthday yesterday?"

"Yeah, Cindy's" Hannah admitted. "I think so too, that's my favorite flavor."

"Oh, so you've had them before?"

Realizing what she'd said, Hannah blushed. "I had some yesterday too," she explained, not ready to reveal that she had had several yesterday.

"Yeah, they usually bring in the same set of flavors, but there's plenty to choose from so it never really gets old."

"I can't wait!"

"Shouldn't be very long, there are a lot of celebrations in this office. I wish they would tell me before it happens. Half the time, they happen when I'm working from home and I miss it."

"You should come in to the office more then," Hannah joked.

"Maybe I will!" Tyler chuckled. "If I don't, more for you then!"

"Early bird gets the worm!" Hannah quipped, now wondering if she and Tyler were flirting right now. A question she would ponder the rest of the day. Which begged the question: who put that bundt cake in her mini fridge that morning? Had it been Tyler?

No, that wouldn't make sense, Hannah realized. It was his first day they were both in the office together and he hadn't even seen her until they met at pancakes. It had to have been someone else.

This line of questioning made her realize she still had her lunch in the mini-fridge. Seeing as she had a break between tasks, Hannah grabbed the remainder of her lunch and snuck over the second kitchen to heat it up in the toaster oven.

While she waited for her lunch to reheat, Hannah couldn't help but snack on a few sting cheeses. "Long time no see, bestie" called Rebecca who had just walked in with her own box of leftovers. "I see that you also prefer the second kitchen."

"It's like the second kitchen and I are old friends," Hannah joked.

"Definitely," agreed Rebecca as she placed her lunch into the newly available toaster oven. "So how are you liking everything, you settling in well?"

"This place is amazing!" Hannah answered enthusiastically, "everybody is so nice, and the office feels really well run. Plus I can't complain about all the food."

"You and I are going to get along; you're speaking my language," commented Rebecca.

"I think so too," Hannah smiled and agreed.

"Ooff! I'm stuffed," Rebecca complained as she slumped back in her chair and stuck her pudgy middle out. "I wish the support staff got tailoring benefits like y'all do. If I didn't still have my fat pants, I'd be in trouble.

"Tailoring benefits?" Hannah asked incredulously.

"Did nobody tell you? All the professionals get to order a couple pieces every couple months. This tailor comes to your office and measures for for custom outfits every time."

"Are you serious!" Hannah nearly shouted. "That's amazing!" Her enthusiasm was truly an understatement. One thing about knowingly letting go that Hannah wasn't super thrilled about was the cost and annoyance of constantly outgrowing her wardrobe. Even if it was just a few pieces, having her office clothes custom made was going to make her life so much easier.

"If you're anything like me, you might wait a month before getting your first fitting. I made the mistake of buying all new clothes when I started right before I put on twenty pounds in my first five weeks."

The suggestion, while sensible, really turned Hannah on in that moment: the thought of this office passively putting that much weight on so quickly was extremely arousing.

"Not to say that'll happen to you," Rebecca walked her comment back, "just a friendly anecdote."

"No offense taken," Hannah blushed, "I could definitely see how that could happen here if I'm not careful." Privately Hannah savored the implications of that last word.
