Chapter 5
When it finally came time to clock out, Hannah couldn't help but notice that one of the food trucks was still parked outside and open for business. It had been quite a while since she had had a baked potato, and nobody who watched her get one would know that she would follow it up with a second dinner a few hours later.Pressing her thumbs into the waistband of her skirt to pull it out and slightly down so that she could inhale a deep breath, Hannah filled her lungs and marched toward the potato truck imaging how heavy her already packed stomach would soon become.
As Hannah was finishing up paying for her food, she could hear Allie further back calling out to Rebecca, "you coming with me to the gym, today?"
"Oof," Rebecca sighed, "I probably should, but I promised an old friend I'd meet up with her for happy hour."
"Jealous!" Allie responded. "Well, have fun, girl!"
"You too, Allie!" Rebecca called back before seeing Rebecca with her baked potato. Hannah could help but immediately flush at being spotted with more food while her co-workers were discussing exercise instead.
"Oooo, is that one of those baked potatoes from the food truck?" Rebecca asked, "you'll have to let me know how good it is!"
"Absolutely!" Hannah replied. "I just can't pass up a food truck!"
"I get that," Rebecca laughed, "I wonder if there will be one at happy hour. I'm definitely going to get some fried pickles from the bar though. Definitely mandatory!"
"Are you going to the ice house?" asked a new voice, which Hannah soon realized belonged to Pete. After Rebecca nodded in affirmation, Pete went on to suggest skillet fries. "It's basically a baked potato; they're covered in cheese and bacon bits. I think they're the best in town."
"Yumm! You're going to make me hungry," Rebecca replied. "I just might have to split one with my friend."
"There you go!" Pete smiled, "sounds like you're going to have a fun time!"
As Hannah observed this conversation, she wondered if Pete's comparison to the ice house's fries to her baked potato were a coincidence. What was more interesting, Hannah thought, was that he seemed to be very happy to hear Rebecca's response to his suggestion.
"Alright, well, I've gotta get going," Rebecca sighed. "See y'all tomorrow," she finished with a smile.
"See you tomorrow," Pete and Hannah replied before everyone began getting into their cars.
"I wonder if Pete put that cake in my mini fridge this morning?" Hannah asked herself. "Whoever it is is more than welcome to do it again," Hannah smiled. "Let's get home before this potato gets cold."
