Manifesting

Chapter 4

The place reminds me of the Beauty and the Beast's castle mixed with one of those wooden taverns they always describe in Dungeons and Dragons' campaigns. As I walk through the hall, I'm gazing at the athletes, already sat at their tables with their appetizers. Devon is late. He's waiting to enter the restaurant to lower the chances of someone thinking me and him came here together.
It kinda hurts, not more than noticing that Matt is not here. I go in the kitchen and meet Ricardo. I find out immediately that he's his uncle. They have the same nose and same negative attitude. I wonder what Devon told him for hiring me just for tonight.
As I go around the tables with a tray in my hand, smiling as if I'm completely comfortable, I can't stop thinking about the fact that my lovehandles disappeared in a day. I'm struggling to comprehend what's happening to me, but I'm sure is connected with that damn notebook. Having manifesting powers is great, it's just a mess as I still don't know how to control them. Some things come to me quickly (money and things, mainly), others don't come at all (aliens and Matt). In a day, a week, two months. It's just so messy.
After my tuna tarts get rejected by pretty much everyone, the lights switch off and the stage in front of the tables enlighten. A woman with heels higher than her parades to the center.
“Welcome, athletes of Crescent Hills High! And hello to your families, of course!”
As she presents the scholarship's organisers, funders and elitist stuff like that, I notice Devon and Matt creeping into the restaurant and sitting to their table as the public claps their hands, genuinely entertained by the presenter.
“Enjoy your meal, we will call the scholarship's recipient after dessert.”
Shit, that will take ages. I just wanted to make sure Matt was alive.
As tempted as I am to leave, I insist with my tuna tarts and go back to Devon's table. As the lights come back on and I get closer, I notice Matt.
He's pale as a skeleton, puffy eyes and face – as he got bit by a bee. His big shoulders make him look like a scarecrow from a horror movie. But he's alive, looks alright after all.
“Tuna tarts?” I ask, smiling as if nothing's weird.
Matt says no, doesn't even look at me. He holds his hands on his stomach, looking at his empty plate with temptation.
I'm so confused. Maybe Billy broke up with him? That's what's happening? I lose weight, Billy breaks Matt's heart, and we get together?
I mean, I love a happy ending.
