Chapter 0 - prologue
Originally, people started releasing lanterns as a way to remind soldiers of the way home, and so that they would never lose sight of the path. After the Archon War ended, it became a way to commemorate those who sacrificed their lives during the war, and eventually, it became a festival that happens every February 15th.The lantern rite coincides with one of the greatest outbursts of power of the gods who fell in the war of the archons, against which Xiao has to fight for the duration of the festival. That is why Aether was not at all surprised when, the first year of their acquaintance, the yashka refused his invitation to go to the festival together. Of course, the blond-haired traveler never found out that that year, contrary to the previous ones, Xiao had seen the festival, and he too, only from afar and for a few brief moments.
Aether’s second lantern rite was chaotic, and something he couldn’t enjoy. No one could enjoy, really. Having to save everyone often distracts you from enjoying small pleasures. However, a crusade with Xiao and a pleasant conversation at the end, made him decide to forget about the festival this year, and all the mishaps that had happened. Because getting to know Xiao more personally was more important to him. The next lantern rite was different. First, Xiao was forced to participate in an awkward banquet organized by Hu Tao. But, then, that resulted in him finally agreeing to watch the lanterns with the blond. This third lantern festival was the best for Aether, because he had finally gotten to enjoy it with the yashka. He wasn’t even sure why he cared so much, but everything felt better if they were together.
And so here he was, one day after his fourth lantern rite. Yesterday had been really special, and he was sure it was for both of them. Because after three years, the evolution between their relationship was clearly visible. Yesterday, Xiao had asked him to release a lantern together, under the moon. He had even thanked him for being there. And then Aether had to hold back, because how could he refuse to be there with him? But he couldn't tell him that so abruptly. He couldn't tell him so quickly that he would go anywhere for him. That his company was something he longed for more and more lately...he couldn't be so direct, because Xiao was special.
