chapter 5

Nate closed the door behind him as Emily ran past him and dove onto the couch. They both froze for a moment as they caught their breath, then started right back at it.

Emily unpacked the food container, and Nate, with her direction, found the napkins. She daintily dabbed at her lips, getting off any lipstick that wasn't staying, and he sat down next to her.

She began with her fries. Her eyes locked with his, eating in super slow motion.

"Oh come on, that's not fair!" Nate laughed.

"You're right." She resumed at normal pace.

It was agony. knowing what lay ahead, but having to wait. And Nate suspected it was for her as well.

"You know, you don't have to finish it all."

She looked up at him. "What kind of woman would I be if I went back on my word?" she said through full cheeks.

"Alright, then at least let me help?"

"Normally, yes, I'm pretty full. But this is actually really freaking good, so nope." She laughed and went back to it.

It was a little bizarre for Nate, watching her eat like this. They'd had lunches together, sure, but this time, she barely came up for air. It was almost trance-like. He didn't know quite what to do, so he rubbed her back. She seemed to relax some at that.

She couldn't have been comfortable, her jeans were cutting into her stomach more than they had been at the outset of the night, and her top had rolled up a little.

She was done now. She wiped her mouth and turned to him. She grinned, and any worry he had vanished.

"So."

"So.& quot;

She practically leapt at him, straddling him and wrapping her arms around his neck.

It was wild. Her lips were so soft. His mind went blank. He felt her run her fingers through his hair and he grabbed her small waist and pulled her closer. His thumbs felt the strip of smooth exposed skin between her shirt and jeans, and the sharpness of her hip bones. She leaned into him more now, and he felt himself sliding down into a laying position on the couch, her above him.

"Em." He found himself breathing.

She stopped and looked at him.

"This is really nice."

She threw her head back and laughed. "I'm really glad." And kissed him again.
