chapter 2

When she woke up from her nap, her first realization was that she was hungry. Groggy and disoriented, she reached over and checked her phone. 3:42am.
"Damn," she grumbled, heaving herself up from the couch. Her step-brother was in the kitchen with his friend, laughing quietly about something on their phones.
"Hey Danny, hey Danny's friend Josh," she said, yawning. Her belly grumbled and she absent-mindedly rubbed it. Her step-brother watched as her fat potbelly jiggled, a good few inches of blubbery gut peeking out from under her way-too-tight shirt.
"Damn, Mia," Josh said, "did you get even fatter?"
"Hey-" she began to protest, but her step-brother interrupted.
"Leave her alone, man. That's my sister, now."
She shot her step-brother a grateful look as she opened the fridge.
"You want some pizza?" he asked, "we have some left over from earlier. Pepperoni and bacon, extra cheese."
"Oh, thank you," she said, accepting his offer, "you spoil me."
The two boys watched in silence as she opened the box to find an entire large pizza, with only three pieces missing. She then proceeded to eat all of it, barely stopping to breathe.
"Urp, we got anything else?" Mia asked, wiping grease from her fingers onto her belly as she belched.
"Yeah, there's some pudding in the basement pantry," Danny told her.
"Sweet," she replied, "will you grab it for me?"
"Mia, I always grab everything for you out of the basement. Why don't you go get it yourself? It's after four in the morning and I have a friend over."
"Ugh, fine." she snapped.
She made her way to the door that she hadn't opened since the week after her mom had married Danny's dad, and looked down the narrow hall. The stairwell to her basement could fit one person comfortably, and had she paid any attention to how round and heavy she had been getting, she might have known better than to go down those stairs. But she was in the same clothes she had been wearing 35 pounds ago, and denial is a funny thing.
