Necroposting question

SumoSized:
I feel like if you're just continuing the conversation it's fine. Even if half the accounts previously in the conversation are now dormant, it lets the conversation carry on and maybe new people will add their opinions to the mix.
Necroposting gets problematic when people just do it just to horny post. The relationship forum regularly gets bombarded with guys (and it's always guys) spamming a post created by a woman months ago. Hell I saw one the other day where the original post was long deleted but guys were still commenting on it thirsting after getting a F feeder.

That happens a lot, lol. But I think that, for some of those, they think someone else is the OP or they only read the title.

Necroposting question

Necroposting kind of goes both ways. If done properly, it's not inherently bad. Maybe the OP wants to follow up, or the thread provides a solid base of discussion to build upon. Although, as user accounts get deleted, older threads might have a broken flow so other posts in the thread are now out of context. Depending on how old the thread it, the information might even be out of date. So, it might still be a good idea to start a new thread anyway.

When it becomes a problem are personals ads which don't age well.. I'd even go so far as to say if the thread is more than 3 months ago, don't bother replying. this is because there's no practical way to track whether the thread was successful, if the OP is still interested, still single, etc. The OP can always make another thread.

I get the sometimes intense desire to find someone, but bumping old threads, especially when the OP is long gone, not only doesn't help but makes the personing doing the necroposting look bad.

Another time when it's a problem is if someone bumps an old thread just to start a problem when none exist. I almost locked a recent thread where someone did just that, but I decided I would wait to see how it played out.

Munchies:
Makes sense.

Personally, I don't consider making a comment on a 5 day old post necroposting. Now, sometimes, I will see a comment that I missed from 3 or 4 days ago responding to something I said.

I usually respond to those unless the person is talking smack and the thread is long buried. No point in doing that, imo. That's just being messy.

Holy sh!t Munchies agreed with something I said?? Someone call Guinness, this is a miracle!!

All jokes aside though I do see your point. I wouldn’t consider commenting on a post 5 days ago necroposting either, it’s more like I am late for commenting because life got in the way. But still though it is a tough call with what is acceptable for commenting on an old forum post and what isn’t. It’s like what’s I mentioned on what’s the intention behind it is.

Again, I am stressing that this weird beef you have with me in your head is extremely one-sided.

Necroposting question

I dont understand why necroposting is seen as something bad in the first place.

Personal ads aside. Why not add something in a discussion under a post that has not reached a conclusion? (And a lot of posts remain without a conclusion) Why care if it is even 1 year dead? Even if the original people are long gone, you can't limit all the potential interest of the discussion to only them! To say that, definetely, nobody else will be ever interested to see the discussion and then some conclusion!

Necroposting question

It’s just odd when a thread gets brought up from the depths because it implies that they were digging through threads and threads of content, as a digital apocryphal text. Unseen by humans since the last it was posted on 7 8 9 years ago from a thread from 11 years ago.

It’s neither right nor wrong it just is and it’s kinda spooky. What else is lurking down there?

There is a plethora of ways to seek a post. There is a search function, then you can also access them from profiles' activity pages, etc.

But even if someone were to dig into it...

...
it just is and it’s kinda spooky.

Why is that the case? Spooky because someone got an interest which makes them search through the forums? I really dont think its spooky!

Because we don’t know what else is down there and I’m using a cave or a deep ocean as a metaphor? Jeez it’s not that serious.

This thread is less about why necroposting is considered rude and more about why people do it.

I was making a joke about it. But this is your thread post anyways, not mine.
