Chapter 1

Before I start writing the actual story, I want to tell you a bit about the background. The lady to be featured here was real. Her problems were real. She was an ex-patient of mine and I nursed her on and off for many years. I have changed the names of the people involved to protect their confidentiality and I have been deliberately vague as to where the story takes place, but it could be anywhere with a large hospital that includes a nephrology department.
The story may get a bit medical, but I will try to explain the more complicated concepts. I make no apology for being graphic about medical procedures and the pre and post operative care. In the later chapters, the procedures described may get rather harrowing for those of a sensitive nature.
It does not include anything of a sexual nature, violence, coerciveness or any deviant behaviour.
