"Mom! We're starting without you!" Maya's voice drifted from the den, sounding more like a summons than a request.
Valerie chuckled, the sound vibrating deep in her chest as she navigated the narrow passage between the sofa and the coffee table. She moved with a slow, rhythmic sway, her breath hitching slightly as she navigated the tight space. The garlic knots were still steaming, sending a scent of melted butter and toasted garlic through the air. As she stepped into the living room, she noticed Maya and ten-year-old Chloe already sprawled across the oversized beanbags, their eyes glued to the screen where a colorful digital world was unfolding.
"Food is served, ladies," Valerie announced, carefully lowering the platter onto the side table. As she leaned forward, the fabric of her shirt pulled taut across her midsection as it strained just a bit under the pressure of her round belly. She didn't mind the feeling; in fact, she leaned into it, enjoying the physical sensation of her own abundance. She felt like a soft, warm anchor in the middle of the room, a presence that filled the space as much as her laughter did.
Chloe looked up, her eyes widening at the sight of the golden knots. "You're the best, Mom." She leaped up to grab a handful, her small frame a sharp contrast to Valerie's lush curves. Valerie watched them with a warm glow of contentment, reaching for a knot herself. She took a slow, deliberate bite, savoring the explosion of flavor that it left in her mouth. She knew some people at the office whispered about her appetite or the way she had to buy custom-tailored skirts, but their opinions felt insignificant compared to the sheer pleasure of a good meal and the comfort of her own skin.
As she tried to settle herself into the armchair beside them, the wooden frame gave a soft, ominous creak. Valerie shifted, trying to find a center of gravity that wouldn't tip the chair, but the armrest caught the side of her hip, pinning her for a moment. She let out a soft huff of amusement, realizing that the furniture was becoming a bit more restrictive than it had been a few months ago. It was a minor inconvenience, one she knew she could easily solve with a few phone calls to a specialty furniture maker.
"Careful, Mom! You're blocking the view of the boss fight!" Maya shouted, though she was grinning as she leaned out from behind the armchair.
Valerie laughed, the sound causing her belly to bounce rhythmically against her lap. She didn't bother trying to shift her position again; the chair had claimed her, and she was perfectly happy to stay put for a while. She reached for another garlic knot, the butter glistening on her fingertips, and leaned back as much as the wooden frame would allow. The feeling of being snug-not just in her clothes, but in the chair itself-gave her a sense of cozy permanence.
As the game reached a crescendo of flashing lights and digital explosions, Valerie felt a sudden, sharp snap. She looked down to see that the middle of her shirt had finally surrendered to the pressure of her stomach. She didn't feel the slightest bit embarrassed; instead, she felt a wave of relief as her midsection expanded into the newly opened gap. She rested a hand on the slope of her belly, feeling the warmth of her skin through the fabric, and smiled. She loved the way her body demanded more space, reclaiming the room around her.
"Mom, look!" Chloe exclaimed, pointing to the screen as their character climbed a massive mountain of gold. "We won! We actually won!"
The girls erupted into cheers, leaping from their beanbags in a chaotic blur of limbs. In her excitement, Valerie tried to stand up to join the celebration, but the armchair gave a final, decisive groan. The wooden leg beneath her right side shifted an inch to the left, and the chair tilted. Valerie gasped, her center of gravity shifting too quickly, and she found herself gently reclining backward, her legs kicking up in the air as the chair tipped over with a dull thud.
