New story section is broken on mobile for android

I'm a bit baffled by this because the links to view stories on the listing page are just simple hyperlinks, as used all around the web. There's nothing magical about them. Try a page refresh if you haven't already and double check the URL e.g. fantasyfeeder.com/stories.

I'd be interested to hear if anyone else has this problem.

Why does every feature i see added to this site always make it worse

karenjenk:
Why reinvent the wheel.
i like the previous way

There were several reasons for this:

* We need to encourage more members to join the website. One way to do this is to show that we have lots of good content, therefore it's important to show our best stories first (like a shop window). Existing members who are more familiar with the website can easily set up a search to find what they want.

* It removes 'clutter' from the page which makes things easier for mobile users where space is at a premium. The most important information is shown first i.e. the page title, description and thumbnail. The supplementary metadata is still available, but it's secondary. This makes it easier to quickly scan the stories for something that seems interesting, without the important information being lost in the mix. Of course, some people may still prefer it the old way because it's down to personal preference, but I'm trying to cater for the majority of members.

* To be fair to authors, those who have spent many hours creating good quality stories, should have their stories shown in precedent over those that have not spent very long. This should improve the quality of stories overall as authors try to get their stories up the rankings. This is in response to a previous forum thread where members were complaining that the quality of the stories seemed to be going down.

Why does every feature i see added to this site always make it worse

FA guy:
I think the stories section is less mobile friendly than ever. Now it doesn't show what stories have new chapters so you have to go through and check each story you're following to see if they've been updated since last time.

Try using the 'following' feature to follow the author. You'll get a notification when a new story or chapter is added.

Stories to appear in a different order

chasingfall:
I would sign up for premium to have the option of viewing the list of stories the old way. Please make a secondary story menu that allows for viewing the old way!

I am fine with changes and features that may attract new members, but trying to learn a new way to go through all of the posted stories is unnecessarily frustrating. I even briefly considered whether I should begin to advocate for moving the writing community elsewhere, but I love FF. If the old way of viewing the stories could coexist with the new story menu, I'm sure you would see more engagement overall.

If this is not possible, I would really like to know why.

Thank you!

The only thing that’s really changed is the ‘more’ button, but making good use of the search should reduce the need to see all the various parameters in the listings. Your search is remembered from one visit to the next so you only have to do this once and you can list by ‘most recent’ as it was before. If there are any search parameters you feel are missing or additional ones you’d like to see just let me know.

Ff links show up when ff user name googled

flavor42000:
I am unable to attach an image to this message due to errors on your end.

If you post the URL of the page you’re having trouble with and describe the error, I’ll look into this for you.

So please Google 'Flavor42000' and remove my comments.

You need to contact Google and ask them to remove the links. Fantasy Feeder has no jurisdiction over their website.

Stories?

Stories are now listed by ‘recommended’. To see the newest, search by ‘most recent’. This search will then be remembered next time you visit.

How to improve your story rankings

I've been working hard to improve the stories section which is now listed according to most recommended by default. This puts out best face forwards for new members and encourage them to join the site. For those who still want to list by most recent, the searches are now remembered so the list will appear automatically how you want it whenever you return.

However if you want to imrove your story rankings and appear further up the recommended list then there's a number of things you can do. The 'most recommended' algorithm takes into account several factors, including whether an thumbnail and description have been entered, how recently the story had been created or updated, how many chapters the story has and number of likes and comments.

Think of a catchy title, upload a thumbnail and enter a relevant description
Your story listing is like a shop window, tempting members in to read your story. A catchy title will help, something that appeals to their imagination or sparks their interest.

Find a nice good quality image for the thumbail. This will also appear as a 'book cover' at the top of the reading page. For best results the image should be at least 800px wide. It may be clipped to fit the page, so ensure the main part of the picture (the bit you want to keep) is in the center of the image. There are many websites out there that offer free clipart and other images that you could use. Try this one for a start vecteezy.com/free-vector/fat.

The description is all important since many members will need further encouragment before clicking to view your story, especially if they're in an area with a slow internet connection. It's easier just to scroll down to look for someting else unless they can see it's something they want to read.

Add at least 3 chapters to begin with
Although writing good stories takes time and effort, it's worth adding a few chapters to start with to tempt members in and get them engaged in your story. You can alway add more chapters later when you have more time.

Try to build up a following
I've now added a 'follow' button to the bottom of the reading page. If you can encourage members to follow you, they will recieve a notification whenever you upload a new story or create a new chapter. This will get you some instant views and hopefully a few comments and likes that will push your story up the ratings. Members on this site seek out talented authors and keenly wait for new content to become available.

This list isn't conclusive, but hopefully it's a start. I haven't covers interesting plot ideas or good grammar and spelling which will also lead to more views and interest in your stories.

Stories to appear in a different order

Thanks for all your feedback on this. It's great that so many of you care enough about the stories section to speak up about your concerns, and I've tried to take these into account.

The stories listings have now been re-ordered so that the most popular stories are shown first. This will highlight our best stories to new-commers, hopefully encouraging them to stay. It also gives due credit to our most talented and conscientious authors who have taken time and effort to create really entertaining stories.

However it's apparent that many of you longer term members have read most of the stories we have and just want to see the new stories comming in. Well I've created a new feature that should accomodate this, by automatically saving your searches and displaying the results by default.

When you first view the story listings they will be ordered by recommended. However if you then search by most recent, this search will be saved so that when you return the most recent results are shown. You should only need to do this search once.
