Chapter 8
Kate burst into her room and immediately fell down on her bed, buried her face in her pillow and began to cry. Any and all things that had previously turned her on about her weight gain were gone. She felt so humiliated by what had just happened on the field that she thought she might never eat again. Jeff sat on the bed next to her and rubbed her back as he tried to help her through the ordeal she had just endured.“It’s ok, babe” said Jeff, reassuringly.
“Are you kidding me?” screamed Kate through her tears. “I couldn’t even run for ten minutes out there. I’m such a fat ass.”
“Hey, come on” said Jeff. “So what if you’re not what you were in high school. You’re still beautiful.”
“Stop saying that” she cried. “I’m a pig.”
Jeff looked at her for a moment, then abruptly got up and walked out of the room. Kate just buried her face in the pillow once again and bawled.
About an hour later, Kate heard the door open. She looked up to see Jeff walk in and turn on the lights. He had a department store bag in his hand. He dropped the bag on the floor and pulled out a brand new scale. He placed it on the floor in front of the mirror.
“I want you to get naked and step on the scale” he told Kate, coldly.
“Are you fucking kidding me? No way.”
“I’m tired of you whining about your body” said Jeff. “It’s time you stopped thinking about what you used to look like and start loving who you are.”
Kate had to admit that he had a point. She was constantly comparing her current physique to the one she had in high school. She wiped the tears from her eyes. “But what if it’s a really high number?” she asked.
“Who cares?” replied Jeff. “Whatever it is, that is who you are now and you are beautiful. Stop worrying what other people think of you. I know you don’t entirely hate the extra weight. I can see it in your eyes when you look in the mirror. You’re just caught up in other people’s impressions of you. Get on the scale and see what you are and you can end all these bad feelings.” While Jeff knew that a girl who was comfortable with extra weight was more likely to gain even more, at that moment he really did just want Kate to start feeling good about herself.
After thinking about it for a second, Kate decided that Jeff was right. She had been running from the scale for too long. She knew deep down that the extra weight she had put on over these last few months excited her, even if it made others look down on her. She rose from the bed and peeled off the sweat-soaked baggy t-shirt she was wearing and removed her sweat pants and panties. Then she approached the scale, gave Jeff a quick kiss, and stepped on. As she stood on the scale facing the mirror, she grew excited to see where the numbers on the scale would stop. She had graduated from high school as an athletic 115 pound girl. She began college at 120. But that was so long ago. Now she looked down as the numbers settled on her new weight.
