chapter 5

It had been a full week since Becca had her first real girlfriend. She had never been happier and it seemed like everyday, Naomi was showing her something new. There was one problem with all of it. Becca was still horribly embarrassed about Naomi. She felt like she was really in love, but didn’t want any of her “normal” friends to know that she was attracted to a girl this big. She had become a little more open about liking women, even joking about it with her friends, but like always, her attraction to bigger girls was a secret she just couldn’t let anybody know about.

Like every night before, Becca and Naomi has made “plans”. Really their plans were just to order a large amount of food, Naomi would eat it while Becca watched and then Naomi would convince Becca to try something new. Naomi was waiting outside Becca’s apartment building. They were going to pick up some of Naomi’s favorite foods from a few restaurants on the walk to Naomi’s place. Becca opened the door and smiled at Naomi.

Naomi wrapped her pillowy arm around Becca’s shoulder and pulled her close they walked,” How were classes today?”

Becca giggled,” It’s Saturday.”

Naomi took a second to think,” Uh, no it’s Wednesday.”

Becca stopped,” We started dating last Friday and we’ve been together for a week.”

Naomi took another second to think it over and just agreed with Becca. As she was wrapping her arm around Becca again, somebody called out,” Hey! Becca.” A tall fit guy around the same age as Becca jogged up to her. Becca instinctively shoved Naomi aside, embarrassed to be seen with her.

Naomi glared at Becca and whispered,” What the hell?”

Becca shrugged and greeted the guy talking to her,” Hey, Tommy.” Tommy was a traditionally handsome man she’d been friends with since they had a few of the same classes back in the fall.

Tommy smiled at her and asked,” So, who’s your friend?” Gesturing to Naomi.

Becca hid her anxiety as best she could and said,” Oh, this is Naomi. She’s uh... teaching me to play guitar.” She could feel Naomi’s blood pressure rise.

“Well, if you’re not caught up in a lesson, we were going to play basketball, and we could use another player,” he motioned to the group of other guys behind him.

Becca went to answer him, but Naomi pushed her behind and said,” Oh, she’s gonna be working on her fingering all night.”

Tommy chuckled and said,” Well, maybe you could play something for me, then,” before he ran back to his other friends.

Becca just wished she was dead. She couldn’t make eye contact with Naomi as they continued their walk.

Naomi couldn’t look her in the eyes either and said,” Why do you keep doing that?”

Becca sighed,” I don’t know.”

Naomi crossed her arms,” This is like, the fifth time and...” she paused and looked back at Becca. She looked like she was about to cry. Naomi put her hand on Becca’s hip,” Hey, I’m sorry. I keep forgetting you’re knew you all this.”

Becca hugged her tightly,” I just panicked. That’s all.”

Naomi cradled her and kissed her forehead,” If I was a bad person, I’d make you buy me dinner for that.” Naomi was completely aware of how much she ate, and knew that sometimes her “dinner” could cost up to the triple digits.

Becca raised an eyebrow,” Ya know, you’ve never told me how you can afford to eat like you do.”

“I wrote some songs when I was in a band and they got a record deal after they kicked me out. I get a check from them once in a while.”

Becca clung to Naomi’s arm. The sun was starting to set and the cool of the night was setting in.
