“I haven’t cheated! I know how serious this is for me. I swear,” Oliver lies.

“The scale doesn’t lie. I know you cheated. Don’t pretend like you didn’t have cafeteria workers bring you food all hours of the night when you thought I went home. You’re quite infamous down there. I know everything that happens in the bariatric unit,” Dr. Montgomery shames Oliver and walks over to the side of the bed. He reaches behind Oliver’s bed pillows that prop the whale of a young man up. His hands slide out with a handful of empty chip bags and warm, melting candy bars. He throws them on Oliver’s belly.

“If you were sticking to my regime you’d be losing approximately 15 pounds per week. Don’t think of it as cheating on your diet. The only thing you're cheating on is yourself. You’ve cheated yourself out of your aspirations by letting yourself get this big and if you don’t stop soon, you’ll have cheated yourself out of your life.”

“I can’t help it. I try and I try, but food is my drug of choice. What is life without being able to eat such delicious food all of the time?”

“Oliver, let me tell you a story. When I was young I really wanted to play soccer. I begged my mom to pay the fees to join the team. I’ll be honest. I didn’t go to all the practices and I did a terrible job keeping up because the idea was better than the reality of the situation. Sure, I liked soccer, but I decided it wasn’t for me. The coach put me in on some games, but I mostly sat on the bench because I never put in the work. The moral of the story is that I wasted everyone’s time and my mom’s money. The same is true for you. If you are going to be a player in this game, you need to use your resources and play the game. I want to get you off that bench before you get too heavy to get off of it.”

“Maybe I don’t want to play this game anymore. Keep me on the bench because this fucking sucks!” Oliver exclaims, only pissing Dr. Montgomery off more.

Dr. Montgomery gives his monologue: “Fine, have it your way. You have proven time and time again that you can’t put in the work and keep it off making you unqualified for life saving bariatric surgery. If you spent as much time dieting and exercising as you did eating and sleeping, you’d keep the weight off and we wouldn’t be having this conversation. I’m sending you home. Congratulations, you’re hopeless. You want to die? Fine. I am discharging you. I will write you a prescription for Duloxetine. It’s used to help with your depression, anxiety, diabetic neuropathy, and chronic muscle pain. I feel like it will help you maintain some stability and pain relief for a little longer. This is the last and only thing I can do for you without a serious commitment, so I recommend you start making your funeral arrangements.”

“Wait! No, I didn’t mean it!” cries Oliver.

“Too late. Go find a new doctor willing to put up with this bullshit. You’re out of here!”

“Who is going to take care of me when I’m discharged? I have no one at home. My parents are going back to London and Dylan left me.”

Josh sighs listening to the dramatic conversation Oliver causes. “Oliver. I can’t be around during the day, but I haven’t signed a lease yet. I will come live with you. I can help pay some of the bills and give you care in the morning and evening.”

“Please, no! He is going to starve me! Please, please, please! I will do better, I promise! Just don’t leave me with Josh,” begs Oliver.

“It’s settled. We are sending you home under the assumption Josh will take care of you. If not, then good luck,” closes Dr. Montgomery. He walks out of the hospital room leaving a tension between Oliver and Josh. Dr. Montgomery calls for a medical transport and completes the remaining paperwork; No additional medical and preventative treatments will be given to Mr. Oliver Dives.
