Happily married

chapter 2 six months later

Six months after getting married, Fiona and george had settled into their new roles.
Fiona did everything in the house. Not only the cooking, cleaning, washing, ironing gardening and shopping. She made the beds, she paid the bills, if anything went wrong, she arranged for workmen to come, she’s organised the complete redecoration of the house since they had moved in too.
George did not have to lift a finger to help. He did have a heavy workload though. He was working quite a bit of overtime to try to get through it all. He stayed behind at least an hour every working day and he found that if he went in on a Saturday morning, it was so quiet without any phone calls to distract him that he could get as much done as a normal working day.
When he got in, Fiona had a substantial lunch ready, then he’d settled down for a nap before watching a football match on the telly. On a Saturday night, they usually had a late afternoon tea instead of dinner.
On a Sunday, he would have his only lie in of the week. Fiona brought him his breakfast in bed. He loved a cooked breakfast! Then he’d go back to sleep for an hour or so, getting up around eleven just in time for his Sunday roast dinner. After such a big meal, a nap was in order, then he’d read the Sunday papers, catch up with friends on the phone.
The effects of his sedentary lifestyle and Fiona’s meals was already having an effect on his figure. His size 32 trousers were getting rather snug. He was developing a little bit of extra padding all over. His weight increase had gone unnoticed by George because it had been so gradual. He never weighed himself.
He liked Fiona’s cooking. She’d had a few failures in the last six months, but that was understandable. Her baking at the weekend was astounding! George looked forward to whatever came out of the kitchen every mealtime.
Fiona thought it was a good idea to buy him some new work trousers and a couple of shirts. She bought size 34’s instead of 32’s. He appreciated the new clothes. He’d not bought anything new to wear since before the wedding.
When she was looking at the new clothes, Fiona thought she ought to put George on a diet. He just had a few pounds to lose. His job was sometimes very stressful. It would do him good to lose a bit of weight.
But then again, she quite liked the extra softness he had. He’d never been skinny or bony, but the few pounds added to his frame made him more cuddly. What would happen if she did not make any changes to his diet? What would he look like in another year? Maybe he would put on a few more pounds. She would not mind that.
What would he look like in ten years time if she made no changes? Would he become one of those middle aged men with a large belly? No, that wouldn’t happen! She would have him on a diet before he became unhealthy. She didn’t mind a few extra pounds, but she did not want him to get fat.
