Submitting to Sarah

Chapter 1 - The Start of My Health Journey

Dr. Smith didn't sugarcoat it. He looked at me over the top of his glasses, his expression a mix of professional concern and stern reality.
"Sarah, you're twenty-eight years old. At five-foot-five, the scale in the hallway is reading exactly three hundred pounds. You are clinically obese, and your blood pressure is creeping up to match. If you want a long, healthy life, you need to slim down. You have to lose weight, starting now."

The car ride home was quiet. I stared out the passenger window, chewing on my lower lip, feeling the heavy, uncomfortable truth settling over me. Beside me, my husband, Joseph, kept shooting me worried glances. We were quite the pair. Joseph is a fair-skinned white guy, five-foot-ten, and a solid 165 pounds of lean muscle. He practically lives at the gym, runs half-marathons for fun, and has always been in fantastic athletic shape. Sometimes, catching our reflection in a storefront window, I felt like a walking "before" picture next to his "after."

When we finally parked in the driveway, I broke down and told him exactly what the doctor said.
Joseph didn't flinch. He just reached over, took my hand, and squeezed it. "Then we do this together, mi amor," he said, his pale blue eyes completely earnest. "I know a lot about fitness and nutrition. I can teach you some exercises to get started, and we'll completely clean up your diet. We're a team."

The very next day marked the Great Kitchen Purge. We stood in front of the open pantry, staring at the casualties: half-empty boxes of sugary cereal, family-sized bags of spicy tortilla chips, sleeves of cookies, and the giant tub of dulce de leche ice cream in the freezer.
"I'll get a trash bag," I sighed, mourning the snacks.

"Wait, don't throw it all away," Joseph protested, his frugal side kicking in. "That's good money down the drain. I'll just finish this stuff off over the next week or two. You stick to the grilled chicken, broccoli, and the meal plan we wrote out. I'll make sure the junk is completely gone so you aren't tempted. It'll be nice to have some treats myself for once anyways."

And so, our new routine began. Joseph was incredibly patient. He showed me how to do modified squats in the living room, walked beside me on the treadmill at the gym, and cheered me on when I swapped my afternoon pastries for celery and almond butter. It was exhausting, sweaty, and sometimes frustrating work, but I was determined.

While I was sweating it out and eating lean proteins, Joseph was diligently "disposing" of my old pantry stash. I'd sit on the couch drinking sparkling water while he polished off the rest of my cookies or finished the pint of ice cream so it "wouldn't go to waste."

Two and a half months later, I stepped onto the bathroom scale, holding my breath. I watched the digital numbers flicker and settle.
270. I gasped. Thirty pounds. I had lost thirty pounds. My jeans were comfortably loose, my face looked more defined in the mirror, and I actually had energy in the mornings. I was so excited I practically kicked the bathroom door open to go find Joseph.

"Joey! I hit the thirty-pound mark!" I cheered, practically skipping into our bedroom.
I found him standing in front of the full-length mirror, holding his breath, wrestling with the button of his favorite pair of slacks. He looked up, his fair face slightly flushed. He finally managed to get the button to clasp, but the fabric was strained tightly across a brand-new, distinct softening around his middle.

"That's amazing, babe!" he said, giving me a strained smile before exhaling, the button on his pants looking like it was holding on for dear life.
It turned out that adding a daily surplus of family-sized chips, cookies, and sugary ice cream to his normally balanced diet had caught up with him. While I had shed thirty pounds of weight, my incredibly fit husband had managed to put on ten pounds of pure junk-food sympathy weight, but things were on the upswing I was sure we'd be the new Fit couple in no time.

Later that evening, as Joseph changed into his pajamas, I found my eyes lingering on him in a way they hadn't in a long time.

The sharp, chiseled lines of his torso that I was so used to seeing had definitely softened. There was a subtle but undeniable new curve just above the waistband of his sweatpants; a little extra padding that completely hid the rigid abdominal muscles he used to sport. When he turned to the side to toss his shirt into the hamper, I could clearly see the new, gentle slope of his stomach.

I expected to feel worried for him, or maybe even a little guilty since it was technically my old junk food that caused it. Instead, a strange, warm spark of intrigue flared in my chest. I watched him casually scratch his newly softened belly, completely unaware of my intense gaze.
It was... kind of nice.

Actually, it was more than nice; it was strangely appealing. For our entire relationship, Joseph had been a statue of physical perfection, a standard I always felt miles away from. Seeing this softer, more relaxed version of him felt remarkably grounding. It made him look less like an untouchable fitness magazine cover and more like a cozy, tangible husband. There was a secret, surprising little thrill in knowing that my old habits had rubbed off on him, blurring the stark contrast between our bodies just a little bit.
I didn't say a word, of course. I just smiled to myself, pulling the comforter up to my chin. I wasn't about to say anything out loud or actively encourage him to keep eating like that. I mean we were supposed to be on a health journey after all. I was still focused on my own goals, but as he climbed into bed, bringing that slight, new heaviness with him and pulling me close, I decided I was just going to quietly enjoy this new development and take mental notes on how I feel about it if it continues.
