Chapter 1

Luz came out of the shower with her hair twisted up and a towel knotted under her arms. Training sat on her the way it always had: clean lines, a taut belly, the long athletic legs of a woman who spent her days counting other people's form and her evenings refusing to count her own. Brown hair, darker when wet. Green eyes that looked almost gray in this light. She padded into the kitchen, opened the fridge, and drank orange juice from the carton the way Mark always told her not to and always smiled about.
He had texted at six-forty. *Wrapping a call. Don't wait. Love you.*
She had not waited, not for dinner. She had eaten standing up, a piece of salmon and leftover greens, and then she had done what she sometimes did when the house was hers and the wanting arrived like weather.
She told herself she would only look for a minute.
The laptop was open on the bed, angled away from the door out of a habit so old it felt like manners. On the screen a man who was nothing like her husband sat on the edge of a mattress and let a woman sink her hands into him. Soft chest. Heavy belly that moved when he breathed. Thick thighs that made the woman's fingers look small. Luz had the volume down to a rumor. She was on her back in one of Mark's old T-shirts, knees fallen open, two fingers moving in the tight, familiar circle she used when she needed to be quick and quiet. Her other hand was under the shirt, pinching a nipple that had gone tight the moment the man's stomach had filled the frame.
She was close. That sweet, almost angry heat low in her abdomen. She bit her lip and watched the woman's palms travel the man's sides as if she were reading something written there in flesh.
When she looked up, he was already there.
Mark stood in the doorway of their bedroom with his mouth open and nothing coming out of it. Tie loosened. Rain still darkening the shoulders of his coat. Tall and lean as a blade, brown hair flattened from the weather, blue eyes doing the math of the scene in one awful second: the light of the screen still leaking across her thighs, her wet hand, the frozen frame of a belly she had no business wanting.
She slammed the laptop half-shut and yanked the shirt down and it was already too late.
For a moment neither of them moved.
"I-" she said, and then nothing.
Mark set his bag down very carefully, as if the floor might break. He did not look angry. That was the first thing that undid her. He looked startled, and then like a man deciding, on purpose, not to make a wound.
"Hey," he said. Soft. "Okay. It's okay."
"It isn't." Her voice came out thin. She pulled the duvet over her hips and hated herself for the prudery of it, as if the problem were her cunt and not the thing she had been feeding it. "You're early."
"I know. I'm sorry. I should have-" He stopped. Rubbed his mouth. "Can I sit?"
She nodded because if she spoke she was going to cry, and crying over this felt like a second humiliation.
He sat on the edge of the bed, not crowding her. He smelled like the office and rain and the cologne she had given him three Christmases ago. Up close he was so much himself it made the screen behind her feel obscene: the long line of his throat, the narrow cut of his waist, the wrists that had never thickened no matter what she cooked.
He glanced at the laptop. He did not open it. He didn't need to. The image was still ghosting the inside of the lid.
"Will you tell me?" he asked.
Luz stared at the ceiling. Her pulse was in her face. "I watch it sometimes. When you're late. When I'm... I don't know. Restless."
"Fat men," he said, not as an accusation. As a fact he was willing to hold.
She shut her eyes. "Yes."
"For how long?"
"Always. Not always-always. Since before you. Since I didn't have words for it. And then I met you, and you were-" She gestured at him helplessly, at the beautiful spare architecture of him. "You were you. And I loved you. I love you. I didn't want this to be a verdict on you."
Mark was quiet long enough that she had to look at him. His mouth was thoughtful. His eyes were wet at the corners, not from hurt exactly. From the effort of being careful.
"Did you think I would leave?" he said.
"I thought you would feel like you weren't enough." The words tore. "And you are. You are enough. This is not because you failed at something. Your body is the body I married. I wake up glad for it. I just... there's this other thing in me and it doesn't ask permission. I look at those men and my mouth waters and I hate that it does, because it feels like cheating with my head."
"Is it cheating?"
"No. I don't know. It feels disloyal."
He reached over and took the hand that was not hiding under the duvet. His thumb found the dampness still on her fingers and did not flinch from it. He held on.
"Luz. Look at me."
She did. Green to blue.
"You didn't hurt me by wanting something," he said. "You would hurt me by being ashamed in a house where I have always asked you not to be. I don't love a censored version of you. I love you. The woman who can deadlift her own stubbornness and then come home and burn the rice. If this is in you, I want it in the room with us. Not in a laptop you slam when you see me in the door."
Her throat worked. "You can't get fat. You eat like a teenager and you stay like this. I've watched you try. Thanksgiving. That winter you drank the stouts. Nothing. It's your wiring."
"I know." A small, crooked almost-smile. "Trust me. I know."
"So what am I supposed to do with it? Just... keep it in a drawer?"
"I don't know yet," he said honestly. "But we don't have to know tonight. Tonight I only need you to hear that I am not disgusted. I am not angry. I am a little thrown, and I am still on your side. Completely."
She made a sound that was half laugh, half sob, and folded forward into him. He got his arms around her. She pressed her face into the rain-cold of his coat and shook. He stroked her back through the thin T-shirt, the same long strokes he used when she came home wrecked from a double class.
"I'm sorry you found out like this," she mumbled into wool.
"I'm not sorry I found out." His mouth was in her hair. "I hate that you were alone with it."
They stayed like that until her breathing evened. The laptop went dark. The radiator ticked. Somewhere in the house the dishwasher clicked off and left a thicker quiet.
"Do you want me to sleep in the spare room?" she asked, because some old frightened part of her still needed the question.
"Don't be an idiot," he said gently, and kissed her temple. "Go wash your face. I'll lock up."
She went to the bathroom and looked at herself under the hard light: flushed, eyes swollen, mouth a mess. She washed. She put on the soft gray pajamas she wore when she wanted to be a person again. When she came back he had shed the coat and the tie and was in the navy pajama pants she liked, bare-chested for a moment as he rummaged in the closet. She caught the familiar landscape of him-ribs, flat stomach, the faint trail of hair-and felt the old love and the old hunger collide and not know where to sit.
"I'm going to brush my teeth," he said. "Get in. You're cold."
She got in. The sheets were cool. She lay on her side facing the window and listened to water, the tap, the familiar domestic punctuation of him being alive in the next room. Shame was still there, but it had changed temperature. It was no longer a fire. It was an ember she could hold if she was careful.
He turned the bathroom light off.
She did not see him pause at the linen cupboard. She did not see him take the spare pillow, the softer one they kept for guests, and hesitate with it against his chest as if he were about to do something slightly insane. She did not see him work it up under the pajama top, settling the bulk low, smoothing the cotton so it would not scream *prop*. He looked down at himself in the dark glass of the window and let out a breath that was almost a laugh. He felt ridiculous. He also felt, with a clarity that surprised him, devoted.
He got into bed behind her.
The mattress took his weight. His knees found the backs of hers. One arm slid under her neck, the other came around her middle, and then the new thing arrived against the small of her back: heat, and give, and a forward curve that did not belong to the man she knew by heart.
Luz went still.
For a second she thought he had brought an extra pillow into the huddle the way he sometimes did when she was sore. Then he tightened the hug and the softness spread against her, unmistakable, a belly that was not muscle and not bone, a padded warmth that filled the space where his flat abdomen should have been.
Her breath left her in a single low sound.
"Mark."
"Mm."
"What did you-"
"Shh." His mouth was against the nape of her neck. "Just... tell me if it's stupid. I'll take it out."
She turned in his arms so fast the sheet twisted. Face to face now, close enough to see the faint sheen of nerves in his eyes. She put her palm on his chest and traveled down, over cotton, and there it was: the fake swell, yielding, slightly lopsided, warm from being against him. She pressed. The pillow compressed and then pushed back. Her fingers sank and the fabric stretched.
Something in her unlatched so hard she felt it in her teeth.
"Oh," she whispered.
"Yeah?"
"Yeah." It came out wrecked. "Mark. God."
She shoved the covers down so she could see. In the dimness the navy top was taut over the borrowed belly. It looked wrong and it looked exactly right. She palmed it with both hands, squeezed, watched the shape move under her grip the way the men on the screen moved, except this was her husband's laugh trapped in his throat and his pulse hammering under her little finger when she found the real heat of his skin at the collar.
"This is insane," he said, but he was smiling, shaky.
"Don't you dare take it out."
She pushed him onto his back and straddled his thighs, pajama bottoms whispering. She sat there looking at him as if he had been newly invented. Her hands went back to the belly and stayed, kneading, learning. Softness. Resistance. The faint shush of feathers or fiberfill. Underneath that, the hard familiar board of him, the man who could not get fat, holding still so she could have this.
Inside her the want was no longer a secret with teeth. It was simple and huge. Her cunt, which had been left stranded an hour ago, clenched around nothing and then slicked so fast she felt it on her inner thigh.
"I thought you would laugh at me," she said.
"I almost laughed at myself." His hands settled on her hips, thumbs in the hollows. "Then I thought about your face on that bed and I couldn't stand the idea that the only version of this you get is a video."
"You're not them."
"I know."
"That's why it's working." She dragged her nails lightly over the taut cotton. "It's you. It's you doing this. That's the part I didn't know I needed."
He pulled her down and kissed her. It was not a careful kiss. It was the kiss of a man who had walked in on his wife's private hunger and decided to climb inside it. She opened for him, moaned into his mouth, ground down and found him already hard against the cleft of her through two layers of cotton. The pillow belly mashed between them, a third presence, warm and stupid and perfect. Every time she moved it pushed up under her breasts. Every time he breathed it rose into her sternum.
"Take your shirt off," she said against his mouth. "No. Leave it. Leave it on. I want the shape."
"Bossy."
"You married it."
She sat back only long enough to wrestle out of her own top. Cool air on her nipples. He looked at her the way he always looked at her, like she was still the woman he had watched teach a dawn class and then eaten breakfast with in the car, and also like he had never seen her before. She took his hands and put them on the fake stomach and then on her real one, so he could feel the difference, so she could feel him feeling it.
"You're shaking," he murmured.
"I know. Touch me. Please."
He did. One hand stayed on the pillow-belly as if to keep the spell from slipping. The other slid into her pajama bottoms and found her soaked, swollen, so ready the first two fingers went in with almost no asking. She gasped and dropped her forehead to his. He curled against the spot he had known for years and she clenched around him with a helpless little noise.
"Christ, Luz."
"Don't stop. Don't- talk to me."
"You're wet because of this." Not cruel. Wondering. "Because of a pillow."
"Because of you wearing it. Because you thought of it. Because-" She broke off, riding his hand, the belly bumping her on every roll of her hips. "Because I can grab you and there's something to grab."
She fumbled his waistband down just enough. He sprang into the space between them, hot, already leaking at the tip. She wrapped him with a fist and stroked once, twice, smearing the wetness down. Then she had to have the rest of it. She shoved her own bottoms off one leg, clumsy, laughing under her breath when the elastic caught her ankle, and then she was sinking onto him in one long unstoppable slide.
They both stopped breathing.
He was the same inside her. Of course he was: same angle, same stretch, the husband-shape her body had memorized. What had changed was everything around it-the soft mass she had to lean over to kiss him, the way her clit dragged not only against his pubic bone but against the underside of the pillow, the visual of her slim torso folding toward a roundness that did not belong on him and therefore belonged entirely to this hour. She planted her hands on either side of the belly and used it. Squeezed it when she dropped her weight. Let it take her as she rose.
"Fuck," Mark said, wrecked. "You should see your face."
"Tell me."
"You look like you're starving and like you just sat down to eat." His hands spanned her waist, then slid to her ass and helped her find a rhythm. "You look like I did something right."
"You did." She was already close; the earlier almost-orgasm had left a tripwire. "Harder. I want to feel you and this at the same time."
He planted his feet and thrust up. The pillow jumped. She cried out, not loud, a bitten sound, and met him. Skin and cotton and the faint absurd hush of stuffing. Her breasts moved. His mouth found one and pulled, wet heat, teeth a suggestion. She held the back of his head and the belly and did not know which one she was worshipping.
Inside Mark the feeling was stranger than he had expected. He had thought he would feel like a prop. Instead he felt chosen. Every time her fingers sank into the fake fat she made a noise that he had only heard from her on rare nights, the ones after too much wine when she forgot to be competent. Knowing he had put that sound in her-knowing the mechanism was this ridiculous, tender trick-made his throat tight and his cock heavier. He thought of the laptop, of the anonymous bodies, and then he stopped thinking of them because they were not in the bed. He was. She was saying his name.
"Mark. Mark, I'm-"
"I know. I've got you. Take it."
She came with her mouth open on his shoulder and her hands full of him, the orgasm dragging through her in deep, shocked pulls. She soaked his hips. She clenched so hard he had to grit his teeth not to follow. When it loosened she did not get off him. She stayed seated, trembling, and started to move again, slower, filthy with her own wetness, chasing the aftershocks against the pillow and against the real belly underneath it that she could feel if she pressed deep enough.
"Your turn," she whispered. "I want you to come looking like this. I want you to feel how much I want you like this."
"Luz-"
"Please."
He flipped them. The world went sheets and breath. He stayed inside her, stayed padded, and now the belly rested on her, a warm weight pinning her hips, and that-God, that-tore a sound out of her that was almost a sob. She wrapped her legs around his lean back and her arms around as much of the softness as she could hold and he fucked her in earnest, long strokes that made the pillow shove against her clit on every pass. She was too sensitive. She did not care. She dragged her nails down the cotton and then under it, onto his real ribs, anchoring herself to the man and the costume at once.
"I love you," he said into her mouth, rhythm breaking. "I love you. Even this. Especially- fuck-"
"Come on me. In me. I don't care. Just-"
He drove in and stayed, pulsing, a low groan vibrating against her teeth. She felt him fill her in hot, helpless jerks. She held the fake belly as if it were the part of him that had given her the gift, and when a second, smaller orgasm flickered through her she laughed into his neck, stunned, grateful, a little ruined.
They did not move for a long time.
The pillow, compressed between their stomachs, slowly lofted back into shape. His heart hammered against her breast. Sweat cooled at her hairline. Outside the rain had thinned to a mist that made the window shine.
He started to shift, an apology already forming for the weight, for the silliness.
"Don't," she said. Her voice was hoarse. "Not yet."
He settled. She stroked the curve over and over, absent and worshipful, the way she sometimes stroked his hair when he fell asleep on the sofa.
"Was it stupid?" he asked into the dark.
"It was the least stupid thing you've ever done, and you once assembled a grill at midnight because I said I wanted steak."
He huffed a laugh. Winced as he slipped out of her, a warm slick slide, and still did not take the pillow out. They ended on their sides, her back to his chest again, his padded middle tucked against the dip of her waist. She reached behind and kept a hand there, possessive.
"I was so scared," she said.
"I know."
"I thought if you knew, you would look at me and see a woman who wanted a different husband."
His mouth found the place behind her ear. "I looked at you and saw my wife. Then I went and stole a pillow like a maniac."
She smiled against the sheet. "It isn't the same as the real thing."
"I know that too."
"It was enough tonight." She swallowed. "It was more than enough. I didn't know I could have you and have that feeling in the same minute."
He was quiet. She could feel him thinking with the whole length of his body.
"We'll figure out the rest," he said. "If you want more, you tell me. If this was a one-time fever, you tell me that too. I'm not going to punish you for a door you opened. I'm going to stand in the doorway with you."
She turned her head and he kissed the corner of her mouth.
"Stay like this while we fall asleep," she whispered. "I want to wake up and still have my hands on it. Even if it's only stuffing. Even if it's only you being kind."
"It's not only kindness." His palm covered hers on the fake belly. Under both their hands his real body breathed, lean, unchanged, hers. "I liked your face. I liked being the reason."
"Good," she said, already drifting, sated in a way that went deeper than the tremor in her thighs. "Because I liked your reason."
They lay there in the used-sheet smell of the room, rain at the glass, the warm oval of the pillow keeping its shape between them. Neither of them reached for the laptop. Neither of them reached for tomorrow. In the small weather of the bed there was only the two of them, and the secret that was not a secret anymore, and the first clumsy, perfect attempt to hold it without breaking anything that mattered.
